Invitation to Excellence

Invitation to Excellence is a special weekend program that showcases a few of the exciting academic opportunities Baylor offers. Participants receive a one-time $2,000 scholarship and are eligible to apply for a full-tuition Faculty Scholarship. Prospective students who meet the qualifications below are encouraged to apply to attend the event.

Friday and Saturday, November 11-12, 2016
Friday and Saturday, January 20-21, 2017

You can bring up to two parents/guardians to the event. Expect to be on campus for dinner Friday evening and from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m on Saturday.

Who Should Apply

Applicants should be high-achieving high school seniors who have scored 1300/1360 (old/new) or above on the SAT (math & critical reading) or a 29 or above on the ACT. Saturday’s academic breakout sessions will be hosted by the academic units listed below.

  • The Hankamer School of Business
  • The School of Engineering & Computer Science
  • The College of Arts & Sciences - Sciences Division (November only)
  • The Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences and the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work (January only)
  • The Honors College

These sessions are the best fit for students planning to major within the host’s academic unit. If you are selected to attend and have a major outside these academic areas, you will be placed in the Honors College session. The Honors College offers programs available to students in any major.

If you are a high-achieving student interested in a major outside this realm, please see if you qualify to attend other special visit events such as a Distinguished Scholars Day or a Baylor2 Program.

Students interested in pre-law should consider applying for the January event because it coincides with the interview day for Baylor2 Law School Program.

Requirements for Consideration

Students interested in attending Invitation to Excellence should follow these steps:

  1. Submit the Invitation to Excellence application by the appropriate deadline listed below. The application includes submitting an unofficial transcript and test scores.

  2. Submit a completed admission file to Baylor University by November 1. Your goBAYLOR account will show you what is needed to complete your application file. You must complete your file by the November 1 deadline to qualify for any Invitation to Excellence scholarships.

  3. Email your response (maximum 250 words) to one of the following statements to Make the subject line "Excellence" and be sure to save the file with your name.

What does this verse mean to you as a soon-to-be college student?
    • "Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." - T.S. Elliot
Tell us about a risk you've taken and the outcome.
    • Celebrate your [...] side.
Choose a word that describes you and explain the word and how you have celebrated this aspect of yourself.

The Schedule

The event begins Friday night with an elegant hors d'oeuvres and dessert reception where you and your parents will enjoy mingling with faculty members from all across campus.

Saturday is a full day of experiencing Baylor for yourself. After an early morning overview, students and parents part ways. Students are given a campus tour, eat lunch in a campus dining hall and then participate in an academic breakout session to get hands-on experience with professors.

Parents have an array of choices of how to spend the day. They can:

  • Take a campus tour or explore on their own
  • Meet with financial aid counselors
  • Attend sessions on residential life, student organizations, study abroad, or the Honors College
  • Explore Waco

Students and parents meet up again at the end of the day for a closing session and then have the opportunity to tour select residence halls.

Scholarship Details

The one-time $2,000 scholarship is applied to the year following the student’s high school graduation. Student athletes may not be eligible to accept the $2,000 scholarship and should confer with their coach or Athletic Compliance regarding eligibility.

Students entering as freshmen in the following fall who participate in one of the academic breakout sessions during Invitation to Excellence are eligible to apply for the Faculty Scholarship. Details about how to apply will be provided to attendees.

Those awarded a Faculty Scholarship and later named National Merit Finalists with Baylor listed as their college choice will receive a scholarship that covers their general student fee as well as room and board charges (if residing on campus). Baylor also provides Regents’ Gold Scholarships to these students.
