The Piano Pedagogy major in the Bachelor of Music degree is designed to develop the student's skill in both playing and teaching piano. The piano pedagogy program offers a comprehensive degree program with many opportunities for valuable teaching experiences. Undergraduate piano pedagogy classes prepare future teachers to work with all levels and ages of students in both group and private settings. Areas of study include:

  • Piano Pedagogy
  • Piano Literature
  • Theory
  • Music History

All students desiring to pursue a Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, or Bachelor of Arts in Music degree must audition before members of the appropriate applied music faculty for acceptance into a music degree program.

Through piano pedagogy courses and internships in piano pedagogy, our students participate in the teaching of the Piano Laboratory Program in which elementary-age students from the community obtain their first piano lessons. Our alumni have chosen such diverse career paths as operating independent studios, teaching in large music schools or elementary schools, and teaching at the college level.

All majors offered through the School of Music require ensemble participation each semester. The School of Music offers a variety of ensemble opportunities in the following areas: Band, Choir, Early Music Ensemble, Handbells, Jazz, Opera Theater, Orchestra and Chamber Music. The School of Music presents more than 300 concerts every year.
