Latin American Studies

The Latin American Studies program is a combination of study and research on Spanish- and Portuguese- speaking countries of Central America, South America and Europe. Through intensive studies of either the Spanish or Portuguese language, students will gain also an understanding of political, cultural and historical issues of the Latin American culture. Available courses include:

  • Latin American Nations and People
  • Traditional Music and Culture in Latin America
  • The History of Gender in Latin America
  • Pre-Columbian Civilizations
  • Inter-American Relations

Students interested in international studies and politics have the option of participating in Model United Nations, Model Organization of American States and Undergraduate Moot Court. These competitions give students an opportunity to witness and practice what they learn in the classroom.

The program promotes and encourages scholarly works in Latin America as well as travel and exchange with institutions of higher learning in Latin America and Spain. Baylor currently offers summer programs in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Belize and Guatemala. Full year academic exchanges are available in Mexico, Spain and Argentina. For more information on all of Baylor's study abroad opportunities, visit the Study Abroad webpage.

Baylor University also offers several Living-Learning Centers. These LLC's are housing opportunities designed to place students of common interests together in living and learning environments. The Global Community Living-Learning Center is one that would be of particular interest to Latin American Studies students. Although available for all majors and classifications, the Global LLC is ideal for students majoring in a modern language and wishing to put their skill into practice.
