WACO, Texas (March 1, 2019) – The Rev. Luke A. Powery, Ph.D., Dean of Duke University Chapel and associate professor of homiletics at Duke Divinity School, will present the 2019 Willson-Addis Lecture at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5.

Dr. Powery is a national leader in homiletics, the theological study of the art of preaching, and regularly delivers sermons at Duke Chapel as well as churches throughout the United States and world. Powery is the author of several books, including the textbook on preaching titled “Ways of the Word: Learning to Preach for Your Time and Place.”

“At Truett, Powery will be speaking on the relation of preaching and Pentecost, and therefore about the Spirit’s role in calling forth, enabling and empowering the proclamation of the church,” said Kimlyn J. Bender, Ph.D., professor of Christian theology at George W. Truett Theological Seminary. “This is a great privilege for our students at Truett and all who attend to hear and learn from not only an acclaimed preacher, but a nationally recognized leader in the teaching of preachers.”

Truett Seminary's Willson-Addis Lecture is a gift from Mr. and Mrs. James McCorry Willson of Floydada, Texas, who were active Methodist laity. The lectures, which examine practical Christianity, were named in honor of their daughter, Oragene Willson Addis.

The lecture will take place at Paul W. Powell Chapel at George W. Truett Theological Seminary, 1100 S. Third St. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the Truett website.
