The Beginnings of a Dream

Growing up with a mentally handicapped brother had stirred great compassion in Megan Lopez's heart for people with physical disadvantages. She was frustrated that her brother's classmates would bully him and not take the time to look past the disability to see his heart. He hadn't chosen his lot.

Over the years, Megan learned two invaluable lessons from her brother: acceptance and patience. "Watching my brother taught me to accept people who are different, because I don't know everyone's story," Megan said. "That's why I want to do genetics research. The fact that one gene can cause retardation really interests me."

But this wasn't always Megan's story.

Retracing the Steps

Megan, the first in her family to attend college, had debated which university to attend or if finances could substantiate her goals. But after a campus visit to Baylor, she had fallen in love with the campus, the kind people and the Christian atmosphere. A dream arose in her heart to become a Baylor Bear.

While Megan spent the majority of her senior year in the counselor's office asking questions about college applications, her mom and dad read books about how to make Megan's college dream a reality. Together, they would find a way.

"Well, God's going to have to want you at Baylor, because we sure can't do it by ourselves," her dad said. After applying for several scholarships, the Baylor education and her aspirations to do genetics research came within reach.

"I'm so grateful that people are willing to give when they know the student can't repay them," Megan said. "I think that's the biggest form of giving I've ever experienced, and it definitely humbled me."

Scholarships paved the way for Megan, who is now a sophomore biology major at Baylor University. Her professors and classes are equipping her for a future filled with progressive discoveries through research. She will advocate for those whose voices aren't always heard.
