Baylor Business Students Serve Waco Community Through Business Knowledge

April 1, 2004

Hankamer School of Business students at Baylor University are serving the Waco community and preparing to compete with a host of other universities in a regional "Students In Free Enterprise" (SIFE) competition April 8 in Dallas.

Students from Dr. Mitchell Neubert's "Organizational Leadership and Change" class are participating in the global, nonprofit organization to reach out to the community and teach free enterprise.  In partnership with local community service organizations the students take the lessons they learn in the classroom and put them to practice in Waco.

"This project has been so rewarding in more than one way.  It has helped me utilize the skills I have been taught to help those less fortunate.  It gave me a chance to make a difference in the Waco community," Alli Aman said.

Striving to practice servant leadership, these students have done several projects to benefit Waco. They partnered with Extraco bank to teach personal finance to University Middle School students, researched inter-city entrepreneurship opportunities for the Community Development Corporation of Waco,  and helped economically disadvantaged people through Mission Waco learn how to make a résumé, prepare for job interviews, manage personal finances, and respond to ethical and customer service challenges at work.

"These service projects have had the impact I desired for them. The projects provided a context for practicing leadership and allowed the students to serve others in a business capacity," Dr. Neubert said.

SIFE gives students the opportunity to learn the free enterprise system in a real working situation.  Their mission is "to provide college students the best opportunity to make a difference and to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills through learning, practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise," according to their Web site.

Now the students are putting together a presentation of all of their service in order to compete in Dallas next week against several Texas universities in the SIFE program.

"The Baylor team has done a really good job picking projects there is a real need for here in Waco," said SIFE Director of University Relations Lisa Ramirez said, "That is why I am really proud of them."
