AREAS OF STUDY: Requirements and Degree Plans

Capstone Requirements

Capstone components are designed to represent a culminating undergraduate experience and provide valuable information for program assessment through student achievement. Two capstone requirements are expected of all art majors:
  1. Exam Component
    -discipline-specific exit exam (BFA/Studio majors);
    -core curriculum exam (BA/Studio & BA/Art History majors)

  2. Research Component
    -senior exhibition (BFA/Studio majors);
    -senior portfolio (BFA/Graphic Design majors);
    -senior portfolio (BA/Studio majors);
    -12-15 page senior research paper (BA/Art History majors)

Studio Art BFA
The BFA in Studio Art provides a strong foundation in the creative, technical and historical aspects of the visual arts. Click on the area below for the BFA degree plan.

Art History BA
The art history program at Baylor offers undergraduates a specialization in art history as well as an academic minor in the field. There are also graduate level courses for those students working on a masters' degrees in other areas. Requirements for a Major in Art History-36 semester hours:
  1. Required courses (18 hours)
    ART 1314, Design IA (Two-dimensional Design)
    ART 1316, Design IB (Three-dimensional Design)
    ART 2302, History of Art I
    ART 2303, History of Art II
    ART 3334, Photography IIA (black & white)
    ART 4375, Art Theory and Criticism
  2. 18 semester hours of art history electives (courses at the "3000" and "4000" level)
    Specified requirements in the Social Sciences as part of the Liberal Arts B.A. Degree
    ANT 1305, Intro to Anthropology
    ART 3390, Philosophy and the Arts/Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art
  3. Recommendations
    ART 4399, Senior Thesis, is recommended for those planning to pursue graduate studies.
    Art history majors are advised to fulfill the language requirement in a single language.

Studio Art BA
A general liberal arts degree providing exposure to each of the seven studio areas offered by the Department of Art. This foundation degree is desirable to:
  1. a student certain of his/her interest in art but not yet decided on a field of concentration;
  2. a student wishing a general background for a more advanced degree.

Art History Minor
Requirements for a Minor in Art History- 18 semester hours:
  1. Required courses (9 hours)
    ART 1314, Design IA (Two-dimensional Design) ART 2302, History of Art I ART 2303, History of Art II
  2. 9 semester hours of "3000" or "4000" level art history electives.
  3. Specified requirements in the Social Sciences as part of the Liberal Arts B.A. Degree
    ANT 1305, Intro to Anthropology
    ART 3390, Philosophy and the Arts/Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art.

Studio Art Minor
Requirements for a Minor in Studio Art - 18 semester hours:
  1. Required courses (9 hours)
    ART 1310, Drawing I
    ART 1314, Design 1A (Two-dimensional Design)
    ART 2302, History of Art I or ART 2303, History of Art II
  2. 9 semester hours of "3000" or "4000" level studio art electives.
    There is no guarantee for the Studio Art Minor of enrollment into the upper level studio art classes.
