Cultural Humility

Baylor University's Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

As a leading Christian institution with a strong Baptist identity and heritage that embraces both its global and Texan roots, Baylor University seeks to “educate men and women for worldwide leadership and service by integrating academic excellence and Christian commitment within a caring community." In line with this mission, we seek to embody Christ’s teachings of love and inclusivity across boundaries of racial, ethnic, gender, socio-economic, religious, and other expressions of human difference. Because, at Baylor, "Love thy neighbor" are not just words…they are a way of life.

Baylor University Board of Regents Resolution on Racial Healing and Justice

In June, 2020, the Board of Regents  issued a resolution to codify its dedication to pursuing equality and justice and documented the actions it will take to further the pursuit of a University committed to excellence in all things and striving to openly and actively ensure a campus community where every individual feels valued and equally a part of the pursuit of the University’s mission today and for the future.

Paul L. Foster Success Center's Pursuit of Cultural Humility

Within the Paul L. Foster Success Center, we are focusing this year's staff development efforts on developing cultural humility. Cultural humility is a specific inclusive practice within a diverse community. It is an integral part of intercultural competency and the ability to nurture a caring and healthy environment of diversity through an attitude of multiculturalism.  Cultural humility is the ability to remain open-minded to all aspects of the cultural identity of others, which is achieved through developing the skill set of intercultural competence.  Cultural humility includes recognizing and working to reconcile the power imbalances that exist among persons of various cultures by understanding that there is value in all of God’s people.

Over the 2020/2021 academic year, the staff at the PLFSC will be working on cultural humility by joining small group journaling & discussion forums focused on the Seeing White podcast series. Meeting bi-weekly, each group will dive into discovering how cultural humility can transform their personal lives, work environment and their service to the students at Baylor.
