WISE Graduate Student Virtual Speaker Series. Jasmine Stovall, Ph.D. Candidate (Biology). “The effects of nutrients, environmental conditions, and human activity on phytoplankton communities in lakes”. Summary: Human activities, mainly agriculture, urbanization, and wastewater treatment, have been modifying the conditions of lake and river ecosystems for decades. Overtime, excess nutrient inputs resulting from these activities have altered the global nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycles causing an accelerated eutrophication process. Eutrophication is a natural process that occurs progressively as a lake ages and is characterized by the gradual enrichment of nutrients. If not managed properly, eutrophication and the associated environmental changes can have significant impacts on the phytoplankton community within a lake as well as on overall water quality. In the most severe cases, these impacts may manifest as harmful algal blooms (HABs). HABs are produced by the proliferation of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) species, some of which can produce toxins that are harmful, and potentially fatal, to humans. They are a global phenomenon that have the potential to compromise the quality of our already limited freshwater resources. The overall objective of this research is to better understand how the interactions between changing environmental variables and human activity influence phytoplankton communities and overall water quality in lakes.
