Baylor University’s Tom L. Potts, Ph.D., CFP Awarded the 2019 P. Kemp Fain, Jr. Award - Financial Planning Association’s Most Prestigious HonorOct. 31, 2019
The Financial Planning Association (FPA), the principal membership association for Certified Financial Planner professionals and those who support the financial planning process, announced Tom L. Potts, Ph.D., CFP as the recipient of the 2019 P. Kemp Fain, Jr., Award. Potts was honored at the 2019 FPA Annual Conference, held Oct. 16-18 in Minneapolis, Minn.
Named after the late P. Kemp Fain, Jr., CFP, the award is the association's and profession's highest individual honor and is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to the advancement of the financial planning profession through remarkable achievements in service to society, academia, government, and professional activities.
"As past president and the first academician to serve on the FPA Board of Directors, Dr. Potts is a visionary leader instrumental in defining financial planning as a true profession and bridging the gap between the academic world and the financial planning community," said 2019 FPA President Evelyn M. Zohlen, CFP. "I'm pleased to have an opportunity to recognize Dr. Potts' many contributions to the advancement of the profession by presenting him with the profession's most prestigious award at the 2019 FPA Annual Conference in October."
Potts, who received several nominations, was selected as this year's recipient in recognition for his years of service to the association and profession, for providing an influential voice to distinguish financial planning as a profession and field of study, and for his relentless efforts to push for higher standards in the profession.
As professor of Finance and former director of the Financial Planning Program at Baylor University, Potts has served as past president of FPA, past chair of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, International CFP Council and FPA Global Advisory Council, and as co-founder and past president of the Academy of Financial Services. A researcher, educator and contributor in the field of financial planning, he has been on the editorial review board for the Journal of Financial Planning, Financial Services Review, The Journal of Personal Finance and the Journal of Certified Financial Planners; has presented research and professional papers around the world, including France, Australia, Japan, Canada, United Kingdom, and South Africa; and co-authored Practicing Financial Planning for Professionals.
Dedicated to elevating the financial planning profession, the Personal Financial Planning Association at Texas Tech University awarded Potts with the inaugural Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 and he was recognized as an Honors Award recipient by the FPA of Dallas/Fort Worth in 2010. Most recently, Potts was awarded the Ambassador Award from the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants in March 2019.
It was said in one of his nominations for the P. Kemp Fain, Jr., Award that Potts has been "one of the most influential voices (if not the most) for the financial planning profession within the academic community. [His ability to] identify common ground and his clear vision for the ongoing professional development of financial planning, under the CFP marks, deserves great foundational credit for the CFP Board's crucial impact today."
"I am both honored and humbled to be selected as the 2019 recipient of the P. Kemp Fain, Jr., Award," said Potts. "This recognition is especially meaningful since it comes from FPA and my peers in the noble profession of financial planning."
