Scholarship: Kelly Beth Balke Scholarship

Information: The Kelly Beth Balke Endowed Scholarship Fund in Communication Sciences and Disorders was established in 2018 by Phyllis and Randy Patterson of San Antonio, Texas, in memory of Kelly Beth Balke.

Kelly Beth Balke was welcomed to this world on May 20. 1969, by her parents James and Carolyn Balke. She was born at the Naval Air Station Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The Balkes later moved to Waco. Kelly Beth Balke was enrolled in the Baylor Speech Clinic in the fall of 1973 as a four-year-old. Phyllis Wyrick, as a Baylor Senior, was assigned as her student therapist for individual therapy one hour every day, Monday through Friday. During this time, Phyllis and all of the Balkes became close friends, developing a friendship that would last a lifetime. Kelly continued with Baylor Speech Therapy and different therapists in spring of 1974 and summer of 1974 before entering Kindergarten in fall of 1974.

Kelly will be remembered for her welcoming smile. her distinctive laugh and her sparkling blue eyes. She enjoyed attending concerts, listening to music, reading celebrity autobiographies and doing word puzzles. Kelly had a special interest in Great Britain and visited the nation on several vacations. She enjoyed collecting books, was a wiz at 80’s pop culture trivia, and was a devoted fan of Rick Springfield. Kelly loved animals, especially cats, and appreciated their unconditional love. She deeply loved her grandparents and looked forward to spending weekends and summer breaks with them in the Bleiblerville community.

Kelly displayed amazing courage, strength and unfailing faith throughout her journey with pancreatic cancer. Kelly passed away on October 10, 2012.

The Pattersons have been and continue to be strong Baylor supporters. Their desire for this scholarship in memory of sweet Kelly is to provide support and assistance to future Baylor speech therapists as they minister to those who come for assistance and resources.
