Advising for Students in the Honors Program

N.B.: This page has been updated for advisement of fall classes. You will receive an email from Dr. Beck when it is time to sign up for advising. Please contact Dr. Beck if you have any questions.

When scheduling their advising appointment, students should select the earliest date and time available. Advising appointments will continue to be added until registration begins in April, but students who wait or delay scheduling their appointment may end up registering after early registration begins. If you cannot find an available time for advising, wait a day or two and more availability will have been added. You should not contact Dr. Beck or another advisor to schedule an appointment; simply wait and more times will be added to the scheduling program.


Registration Tips and Timetable


As an Honors student, you cannot register for classes without first completing the Honors Program advisement process. Early registration is a privilege available only to those students who are in good standing in the Honors Program and who fulfill all their advising requirements on time.

If you have decided to resign from the program, you must do so by submitting a Program Withdrawal Form available in the Honors Program office, Morrison Hall 203. Otherwise, you will still have an Honors "flag" that will preclude you from registering.

Specific instructions for registering for classes after advisement are available online. Note that the early registration schedule is tied to credit hours earned. All Honors students will register before the general student population within their classification, but possibly not at the same time as other Honors students with more or less credit hours.


Instructions for advisement/registration:
A Question-and-Answer Approach

  1. What are your major(s) and areas of focus?
    If you are currently a first-year student with an "Undecided" major, or are considering changing majors, then you should look over a slideshow we've conducted for such students in the past. Major Academic Planners (MAPS) can be found at

  2. What are the next-required classes for your course of study?
    Use the Undergraduate Catalog, MAPS, and a copy of your degree audit (available online via BearWeb) to determine some possible courses for next term. These courses should be both
    • courses you still need for your degree and/or your major, AND
    • courses for which you are eligible to register.
    (NOTE: Courses generally designed for first-year students are listed as "1000"-level classes, for sophomores as "2000"-level classes, and so on. Specific prerequisites for Baylor courses are listed, with the descriptions of those courses, in the back of the Undergraduate Catalog.)

  3. What Honors course(s) do you need next semester?
    First look through the list of available Honors courses. Click here for a list of Honors courses sorted by type. You should also review Honors requirements here (the standard curriculum) or in the Honors Student Handbook for other variations, e.g., for students also in BIC or University Scholars. NOTE: Most current first-year students not in the BIC or University Scholars must take GTX 2302 in an Honors section in the fall. 

    Please note that course sections, call numbers (CRN), instructors, and times are subject to change. You should log onto BearWeb for real-time, updated course information.

    Now you're ready to look through the complete schedule of classes for next semester. Class schedules may not be available during the first weeks of advising. In this case, you'll need to confirm available classes at a later time prior to registration. Compare the courses you need, Honors and non-Honors alike, with courses that are on offer next semester. Then map out a tentative schedule using this scheduling grid. (You may need to create a number of different drafts to capture the range of possible schedules.)

  4. What are your advising requirements?
    Many Honors students are required to see an advisor in more than one area. Students should check BearWeb each semester under "Registration" and then "Advisement Contact and Information" to view their current advising requirements and instructions.

  5. In what sequence should you be advised?
    In most cases, you should see your Honors Program advisor first, before you meet with the advisor assigned to you based on your degree/major.

  6. Have you prepared adequately for your Honors-advising appointment?
    Double-check by printing out and completing this pre-advisement checklist.

  7. What if I am currently away from campus or studying abroad?
    If you are off campus and unable to meet face-to-face with your advisor, you can be advised electronically, usually via email. Start by sending an email to your advisor outlining your current circumstance. Your advisor will follow up and provide particular instructions for completing the advising process.

Freshman and Sophomore Honors Students (based on your current year at Baylor, not on credit-hours earned):

You will receive an email from Dr. Beck with the name of your Honors advisor. Please schedule your appointment with this advisor rather than with another person. Note that advisors are located across campus and not necessarily in the Honors Suite.

Junior (Third-Year) Honors Students:
Dr. Scott Moore and Dr. Charles McDaniel advise all juniors, and you should select your advisor based on the spelling of your last name.

Senior Honors Students:

Ms. Diane Haun advises all Honors Program seniors. You should have already received instructions on advising from Ms. Haun.

NOTE: Students graduating this semester must have registered for HON 4088, Honors Exit Review, and completed all Honors Program requirements.


BIC Students:

All BIC students must meet with their Honors Program advisor for a review of Honors Program requirements. Your BIC advisor will discuss your general course requirements with you, but you will need to schedule an Honors advising appointment using one of the above links.

University Scholars:
First and second-year University Scholars will be advised for Honors by their University Scholars advisor. They should not schedule an appointment with their Honors Program advisor.

However, University Scholars in their third year will need to be advised by their Honors Program advisor (Dr. Moore or Dr. McDaniel, as noted above), and fourth year University Scholars who are not graduating this semester must be advised by Ms. Haun.
