Thirteen-year-old Amanda Waslyk is determined to keep the status quo. She and her mother Miriam live happily alone in Pennsylvania coal country and that is just the way she likes it. Unfortunately for Amanda, her mother has developed a romantic interest in the local mailman. Anytime Miriam brings home a new boyfriend, Amanda introduces her imaginary friend to frighten the would-be suitors away. She and "Randolph" devise all sorts of games, plots, and verbal zingers to intimidate the unsuspecting mailman in the hopes that he'll turn tail and leave. Only this time, the suitor isn't so easily daunted: not by the imaginary friend or the precocious adolescent with a genius IQ.
