Student Organizations
Student Organizations are the life-blood of the University. Baylor currently has over 270 student organizations representing student interests in everything from horseback riding to chemistry, kayak polo (did you know there was such a thing?) to fraternities. Student organizations represent who you are as a student. They are your peers, your colleagues, your friends.
More than 83% of Baylor's students are involved in at least one student organization, though most of our students are involved in more than one organization. With more than 270 opportunities to get involved, what will YOU choose?
If you have any questions about student organizations, please contact either Karin Klinger or Mike Rakes or feel free to call us at 254-710-2371.
Student Organization & Leadership Awards ceremony recognizes contributions of students and student organizations
Student representatives and advisors from Baylor's nearly 300 student organizations gathered on April 10 for the annual Student Organization & Leadership Awards ceremony, held at the Galloway Suite at Floyd Casey Stadium. Individuals and groups were recognized for their excellence throughout the evening, which culminated with the annoucements of the student organization Advisor of the Year, Outstanding New Organization, and Student Organization of the Year awards.
ADVISOR OF THE YEAR
Zeta Tau Alpha's long-time advisor, Jane Smith, received recognition for her eleven years of dedicated and passionate service to the organization. Ms. Smith will be concluding her service with the organization at the completion of the 2007-08 academic year. The nomination for Ms. Smith noted, "She is the most deserving candidate for Advisor of the Year award because, not only is she hard working and loyal, but genuinely has the chapter's best interest at heart. Her door is always open to anyone in our organization and she has helped us get through thick and thin. Jane goes above and beyond the call of duty in everything she does for our chapter. She checks up on girls who are going through a rough time, is involved in all events that we host, and is a wise mentor who we all, as a chapter, look up to." The Department of Student Activities is grateful to Jane Smith for her years of service and mentorship to such an outstanding group of women.
OUTSTANDING NEW ORGANIZATION
The Baylor University Medical Ethics Discussion Society (BU MEDS) was named the Outstanding New Organization for 2007-08. The group was chartered in 2005 with just five founding members and has since grown to over 300 members. BU MEDS has taken on several service programs and projects that make it uniquely appealing to students seeking careers in the medical field, including the first ever Baylor Relay for Life. One letter of recommendation supporting the group's application for Outstanding New Organization states, "in the short time BU MEDS has been in existence, it has made an intentional effort to give back to the community and has become known throughout Waco as a dedicated steward to others. BU MEDS has cultivated a membership of caring people who realize the importance of giving back to the community."
STUDENT ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR
The ladies of Alpha Delta Pi earned the top honor of the evening at the Student Organization & Leadership Awards ceremony by winning the Student Organization of the Year for a second consecutive year. Leading up to the announcement of the Student Organization of the Year award, the Department of Student Activities recognized four organizations for achievements in each of the Four Standards of Excellence.
