Baylor’s Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation in the School of Education will sponsor the second annual Rafer Lutz Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, March 28, at the Twin Rivers Golf Course in Waco.
The tournament is a scramble format with a 1 p.m. tee-off time. Lunch and check-in begin at noon. Entry fees are $90 per player or $325 for a team. Students can play for $60.
To register, email Joe_Shim@baylor.edu
. Walk-up registration is allowed, but only advance registration by Friday, March 21, will guarantee players receive a commemorative hat and towel.
The golf tournament honors the late Dr. Rafer Lutz (left), who was associate professor and chair of the Department of HHPR, and the proceeds benefit the education of his two sons. Lutz died in May of 2012 after a yearlong battle with cancer, and his friends and colleagues in HHPR created the golf tournament in his honor.
Lutz was an avid golfer who attended the University of Washington as an undergraduate on a golf scholarship. He was a 1993 graduate with a degree in psychology. He earned a master’s degree and PhD in exercise science, both at Arizona State University.
“Rafer was a humble scholar, a good listener, and just a quality person,” said HHPR professor Dr. Glenn Miller. “I would compare him to Stephen in Scripture, who was wise beyond his years. His life displayed his love for the Lord.”
Lutz’s wife, Lori, and sons will be in attendance at the tournament, Miller said, and look forward to seeing Rafer’s friends.
