Description of Special Education Courses

The following courses and their descriptions are listed in the sequence required in both the All-Level Special Education Program and the EC-6 Supplemental Program.


EDP 2360 Teaching Special Education

This course provides initial preparation in the role of a special education teacher. Students will learn teaching strategies for students with disabilities that are then applied in a one-to-one teaching experience.


EDP 3368 Assessment of Students with Mild Disabilities

Concurrent enrollment in EDP 3470

A course focusing on formal and informal assessment currently in use in special education for students with mild disabilities. The completion of a case study requiring administration, scoring, and interpretation of individual assessment is included.


EDP 3470 Literacy for Learners with Special Needs

A lab-based course involving application of methods for teaching oral/written language and reading to students with special needs. Includes 60 hours of field experiences.


EDP 4352 Exceptionalities

This course provides information about individual differences. The historical foundations, laws, policies, and issues regarding definitions and the identification of individuals with exceptional learning needs, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, will be presented.


EDP 3660 Teaching Associate Special Education Part I

Students receive supervised practice in providing group math instruction in a middle school resource room with culturally diverse students with special needs. Students co-teach with a special education teacher and over the course of the semester take over increased responsibilities for planning and teaching.


EDP 3326 The Developing Child

The study of the physical, cognitive and affective development of a child from prenatal to eighteen years of age. Emphasis is placed on current literature, research findings, and developmental theories.


EDP 3376 Applied Behavior Analysis

Concurrent enrollment in EDP 3660

A course emphasizing behavior assessment techniques and the application of behavior modification principles and procedures to the instruction and management of learners with disabilities. Includes 15 hours of field experiences.


EDP 4351 Differentiated Instruction

Concurrent enrollment in EDP 3660

This course provides information about the historical, philosophical, and theoretical background of curriculum differentiation and specific strategies that adapt instruction for individual student differences. Empirical research that addresses issues and trends will be presented to examine the best practices in differentiation. Specific differentiation strategies that relate to student differences in rate, content, and preference will be applied in the classroom setting.


EDP 3661 Teaching Associate Special Education Part II

A practicum providing field experience in the instruction and management of students with moderate-severe disabilities. Students will receive supervised practice teaching a functional, age-appropriate curriculum with high school students.


EDP 3361 Developmental Disabilities

Concurrent enrollment in EDP 3661

In this course a review of normal human development provides the basis for an in-depth study of the etiology, characteristics, treatment and prevention of developmental disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, mental retardation, and seizure disorders.


EDP 3334 Collaborative Consultation in Special Education

Concurrent enrollment in EDP 3661

A course emphasizing collaborative consultation processes with parents, teachers, support personnel, school administrators and students.


EDP 4660 Internship Special Education Part I

Prerequisites: EDP 3660 and EDP 3661; concurrent enrollment in EDP 4661

Full-time teaching experience in a professional development school. A mentor teacher with certification in special education and resident faculty will support teacher candidates as they gradually assume complete responsibilities for teaching. Course includes one eighty minute seminar per week.


EDP 4661 Internship Special Education Part II

Prerequisites: EDP 3660 and EDP 3661 This course is a continuation of Part I.

Full-time teaching experience in a professional development school. A mentor teacher with certification in special education and resident faculty will support teacher candidates as they gradually assume complete responsibilities for teaching. Course includes one eighty-minute seminar per week.


TED 4662 Internship Special Education Part III

Prerequisites: EDP 4660, 4661 and concurrent enrollment in EDP 4663

Full-time teaching experience in a professional development school. This practicum provides experience in adapting instruction for learners with special needs within the general education classroom. Students learn how to manage behavior, adapt lesson, individualize instruction, and correlate multi-level materials. A mentor teacher with certification in special education, a general education mentor, and resident faculty will support teacher candidates as they gradually assume complete responsibilities for teaching. Course includes one eighty-minute seminar per week.


TED 4663 Internship Special Education Part IV

Prerequisites: EDP 4660, 4661. This course is a continuation of Part III.

Full-time teaching experience in a professional development school. This practicum provides experience in adapting instruction for learners with special needs within the general education classroom. Students learn how to manage behavior, adapt lesson, individualize instruction, and correlate multi-level materials.

Various classroom adaptations for special needs learners will be compared and contrasted including individualization, content mastery, mastery learning, skill-based instruction, and concept- based correlations. Emphasis will be placed upon strategies for classroom organization and management such as grouping, scheduling, room arrangement, and record keeping.
