Purpose

"Crossroads in American History" assists K-12 teachers from 7 districts representing 20,749 students. The project provides high-quality professional development for teachers in 7 Central Texas independent school districts. The major purposes of the program are: 1) to increase teacher knowledge of American history and their pedagogical abilities to teach this knowledge to students; 2) to provide teachers with content, teaching strategies, release time, mentoring opportunities, and resources for the teaching of American history; 3) to facilitate interaction between teachers, institutes of higher education, historians, experts in pedagogy, and museum professionals for an open exchange of resources and ideas; and 4) to increase student knowledge of and achievement in American history.

To accomplish these goals, the Crossroads in American History project includes four major areas of focus during its three-year period: 1) yearly three-week summer institutes at Baylor University; 2) collaborative professional development experiences during each school year; 3) seminars that center on content knowledge and related instruction for preservice teachers; and 4) yearly school-based mentoring and observation support for new American history teachers.
