VETERAN & TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

The goal is to collaboratively study the consequences of toxic and traumatic stress exposure on veterans and emergency responders with an emphasis on developing new treatments for those who do not experience optimal response care. Diseases of interest, with limited treatment options, include Traumatic Brain Injury, Gulf War Illness, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Rehabilitation of TBI patients and understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of blood brain barrier dysfunction and microvascular hyperpermeability following TBI are important areas of interest. For Gulf War Illness, there are no specific treatments with established efficacy for it symptoms. On the other hand, good treatments exist for patients suffering from PTSD, but they are not effective for everybody.
