Martin Museum of Art's Fall Exhibitions Open with a Variety of Art

The Martin Museum of Art kicks off the fall semester with two exhibitions featuring some wildly diverse media.
Gallery I hosts the colorful, contemporary sculpture of veteran artist Jerry Dodd. The sculptures are made of welded steel and painstakingly painted with eye-popping colors. They have evolved from an extended series of pieces and represent what Dodd calls urban totemic markers and signs.
Dodd, a Michigan native, taught sculpture, three-dimensional design and drawing at several New York universities and colleges. He was a professor of art at Texas A&M University Commerce from 1977 until he retired in 2006. He also pursued his vision as a practicing studio artist. Since moving to Commerce, he has exhibited widely in the state and region.His work is included in the Texas Sculpture Garden at the Hall Office Park in Frisco.
Besides showing his work in New York and Texas, he has exhibited in San Diego; Pueblo, Colo.; Shreveport and Monroe, La.; Little Rock, Ark.; Chicago, Ill.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and elsewhere.
Gallery II holds an eclectic assemblage of artwork that represents the lineage of talented studio art faculty that has taught at Baylor. The John S. Belew Collection was established through the generous contribution of a single work by each artist on the 1990-91 studio faculty in the Baylor Department of Art. Artwork is added each time a new, full-time studio faculty member is hired. The collection, with 20 pieces, is a tribute to Dr. John S. Belew, former dean of the Baylor College of Arts and Sciences.
Sprinkled throughout the exhibition are seven of the latest acquisitions for the Martin Museum of Art. Several are pieces the museum has purchased, such as "Warhead," by Texas sculptor Willie Ray Parish. But the majority are donated, including a large contemporary painting by the late San Antonio artist Reginald Rowe. The painting was donated by AT&T Inc.
The Martin Museum of Art is in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center, 60 Baylor Ave., on the Baylor University campus. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The museum is closed during university holidays.
