Hundreds of Volunteers to Participate in Baylor's Biannual Day of Service

Steppin' Out, Baylor University's biannual day of service, will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at various locations throughout the Waco community.

The event is a Baylor tradition that began in 1985. It is one of the largest community service projects on American college campuses and nationally recognized for its commitment to service. In 1993, Steppin' Out was chartered as an independent organization under the department of student activities.

A student steering committee recruits volunteers, finds job sites in the community and plans the Block Party at Dewey Park to celebrate following the event. This fall, close to 2,700 Baylor students will serve at churches, schools and non-profit organizations.

"I am so excited to see this program grow. This year, we created a new position on the steering committee to focus specifically on creating an educational campaign," said Marianne Magjuka, coordinator of service learning initiatives at Baylor.

The committee hopes to raise awareness about the needs in the community and encourage students to make a sustained commitment to service.

Steppin' Out strives to enhance student involvement in community service, as well as interaction between the Baylor and Waco community.

"We hope that this will be the first 'step' toward creating a meaningful relationship with a community agency," Magjuka said.
