Beall-Russell Lecture by Dr. Anthony Grafton: Worlds Made by Words

Libraries have evolved from stacks of books to book-filled halls to pages on the Internet. Dr. Anthony Grafton, Henry Putnam University Professor of History at Princeton University, will give a lecture, "Worlds Made by Words: Scholarship and Community in the Modern West", Sept. 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Cashion Academic Center.

Grafton has written about libraries dating from the Renaissance to the 18th century, the current system in America centered on the Library of Congress, and what society can expect in the digital information age.

He is the author of ten books and received the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the Mellon Foundation's Distinguished Achievement Award and the Balzan Prize for History of Humanities.

"It is an honor to have Dr. Grafton," said Dr. Alden Smith, Professor of classics and associate dean of the honors college.

"He is one of the world's foremost experts in the Renaissance history and the classical tradition."

The Beall-Russell Lectures were established in 1982. They started with the help of a financial gift from Virginia B. Ball of Muncie, Ind., who named the lecture series in honor of her mother. Mrs. John A. Beall and Lily Russell are former deans of women at Baylor. Both are Baylor alumnae of the Class of 1910.

The free lecture is open to the public. It will be in Room 510 in Cashion, 1428 S.5th St. on the Baylor campus in Waco, TX.
