Baylor Team Wins Texas Administrative Law Moot Court Competition

Oct. 23, 2007

A team from Baylor University School of Law won first place at the Texas Administrative Law Moot Court Competition in Austin on Oct. 20-21. Devin Huggins and Alex Bell were undefeated in the double elimination tournament.

Sixteen teams from Texas law schools participated in the tournament, which is sponsored by the Administrative Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. During the finals, teams were judged by three judges from the Austin Court of Appeals. This year's case involved sanctions by the Board of Public Accountancy imposed on an accountant.

Another Baylor team of Rob George and Lane Haygood was defeated in the semifinals. Additionally, Huggins received the top advocate award, and Joel Bailey, who competed on a third Baylor team, received the runner-up top advocate award.

"Each student spent many hours writing the brief and preparing for the oral arguments, and each student did a fine job in Austin over the weekend. The overall strength of everyone on the team contributes in many obvious ways to the team's eventual success," said adjunct professor Kathy Serr, who coached the team with law professor Ron Beal.

A team from Baylor also won the 2006 competition. A Baylor team has won the moot court competition five times in the last 10 years.
