Documentary about Tsunami and Earthquake in Japan Will Be Hosted by Baylor's Japanese Program on April 17

Waco, Texas (April 16, 2012)- A film screening of a documentary about the March 2011 tsunami and earthquake in Japan will be hosted by Baylor University's Japanese program at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in Morrison Hall Room 102.
The event is free and is open to the public.
The documentary film is "Kyo-o mamoru" or "Protecting Today," a student film that documents the lives of tsunami survivors four to five months after the disaster.
The event also will include a book donation drive for children who were affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Minami Sanriku, Japan. Participants are asked to bring simple stories like picture books or fairy tales (written in English). These books will be delivered to them by the students who are participating in the Baylor in Japan Summer Program.
"Kyo-o mamoru" (2011) depicts the lives of people who were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. In order to record their lives after the earthquake, Yuka Kanno interviewed people in her hometown, including her mother, her childhood classmates, and their parents. The film was first presented at Yamanashi Film Festival in 2011, and it has been shown throughout Japan. This is the world premiere of the film outside Japan.
Kanno is from Rikuzen-takata in Iwate. She is a junior at Yamanashi Prefectural University. Her home was destroyed by the tsunami, and she lost three friends who had been her classmates in junior high school.
The movie screening is sponsored by the Department of Modern Foreign Languages at Baylor University.
