Introduction

James A. Curry, Ph.D
Director, Washington Internship Program

The world is full of exciting and fabulous cities, but no city can rival Washington, D.C. in the variety of opportunities it offers to students. Whether a student is committed to a career in government and politics or simply wishes to gain an understanding of the workings of the American governmental system, Washington, D.C. provides an exposure to key people, ideas, and institutions that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. For more than twenty years, Baylor students have been learning through internship placements in Washington, D.C. Many of the hundreds of Baylor graduates who visited Washington as interns have chosen to stay there and build their careers.

The Baylor University Washington Internship Program has benefited from a
large number of supporters. First, of course, the university itself has
generously provided key financial and logistical support for the program. The
Department of Political Science, the home of the Washington Internship,
Program, has provided much needed support of every variety, including the
expertise to design and maintain this website. Special thanks in that regard go
to Ms. Jenice Langston, the department's office manager, and Ms. Meggaen
Neely, one of our top-notch students and a real computer whiz. The numerous
Baylor alumni living and working in Washington, D.C., also have been
longstanding supporters and contributors to the growth of our program. The work
of the Baylor Women's Council of Washington, D.c., in establishing our highly
successful Baylor Buddies mentoring program stands as a case in point. Finally,
the program simply would not exist without the generosity of Ms. Sue Mayborn
and the Mayborn Foundation of Temple, Texas. Mrs. Mayborn's endowment of
the program has ensured that it will continue to benefit Baylor students for many
years to come.

As you look through our website, I believe you will capture some of the enthusiasm
that our students experience while they intern in Washington. If you have any
questions or comments about our program or this website, please do not hesitate
to contact me.
