HEP Summer School in Germany
Sept. 17, 2010Dr. Kenichi Hatakeyama presented a seminar titled "Jets and Missing Energy in the Search for New Physics" at LIP/FCT, Lisbon, Portugal on June 23rd. In addition, Dr. Hatakeyama served as an instructor at the CTEQ-MCnet summer school, which was held in Lauterbad, Germany from July 26 - August 4. The school had broad lectures on Quantum Chromodynamics theory, phenomenology, event generator physics and techniques, and had some hands-on sessions and talks on using event generators. About 60 graduate students and postdocs came to attend the school. Prof. Hatakeyama gave two lectures on "jet physics". In high energy physics, jets refer to collimated sprays of particles originating from high energy quarks and gluons. The lecture covered mechanisms of jet production, how to define and analyze jets, and studies of QCD and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model in jet final states. The school was quite intense. There were two lectures in the morning, two lectures in the afternoon, and after dinner, there was a recitation session in which students ask various questions of lecturers. After the recitation session, there was a "night cap" session in which students and lecturers discussed physics until midnight.
