Bringing the International Physics Community to Baylor University & Waco

Dr. John Thomas, Fritz London Professor of Physics at Duke University, will be visiting Baylor October 5-6. His research focuses on the physics of an optically trapped degenerate Fermi gas, and the universal behavior exhibited by this work has implications beyond atomic physics and lasers, including superconductivity, quark-gluon plasma, and string theory. His visit will include a public lecture entitled "Bowls made of Laser Light to Corral Ultracold Atoms." The public lecture will be at 7 pm on Tuesday, October 5 in B.110 of the Baylor Sciences Building. He will also present the Physics colloquium on October 6. His visit is sponsored by the Department of Physics and the Vice Provost for Research. This visit, as well as an upcoming visit from Dr. Carlos Stroud, Professor of Optics and Physics at the University of Rochester, have been organized by Dr. Linda Olafsen to highlight the 50th anniversary of the laser. In conjunction with public lectures and colloquia, Dr. Olafsen will also be visiting local schools, making presentations about the history and applications of lasers, and leaving behind optics discovery kits and laser pointers, through the support of a SPIE Education Outreach grant.
