October 7, 2008
The Baylor University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa met Tuesday, October 7 at 4 p.m. in room 205 of Morrison Hall. Present were Campbell, Colón, Foley, Good, Johnson, Jones, Kisacky, Matthews, Mazé, Osborn, Tippit, W. Weaver, and student members Sarah Casey, Rachel Kressin, Rachel Sherhart, Paige Tucker, and Helena Wojciechowski.
Chapter interim president Elinor Mazé called the meeting to order and introduced the other chapter officers: Jennifer Good, Vice President and Phillip Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer. Dr. Johnson explained that chapter president Jeff Fish had been granted a research leave of absence for this academic year and the executive committee had made the decision to ask Elinor Mazé to serve in this capacity. In addition, Dr. Sharyn Dowd, newly-appointed chapter historian, has left Baylor to take a position in Atlanta, creating a vacancy in the chapter leadership. The nominating committee has been asked to identify candidates to be presented at our next meeting.
After approval of the agenda and the minutes of last spring's meeting by those in attendance, Dr. Johnson collected chapter dues of $3.00 from those present and also distributed a roster of members, including faculty, staff, graduate students and current students. Presently there are 69 faculty and staff members, 28 graduate students and 10 undergraduate students. The chapter is pleased to welcome four new faculty members: Josh King and Hope Johnston of the English Department, Gardner Campbell of the Academy of Teaching and Learning, and Beth Barr of the Department of Religion. Christine Johnson is a new graduate student in the School of Nursing.
Pres. Mazé then presented the calendar of events for this academic year. Important dates include:

The status of committee memberships and assignments was reviewed and those present were encouraged to volunteer to serve on a committee, which typically requires only a modest amount of time and energy. Jennifer Good reported that the Committee on Members-in-Course is in the process of considering August and December graduates for fall initiation and that another two members for this committee would be appreciated. Julie Kisacky reported that the Initiation Committee will proceed as in past years and would be able to utilize another member or two. Lorin Matthews reported that preparations for the National Merit Scholar Reception were progressing well and most of the assignments had been made. Michael Foley indicated that the Albaugh Lecture is scheduled for October 21 in Barfield Drawing Room. Publicity efforts are underway and chapter members are especially encouraged to support this event. Susan Colón reported that the Robinson Scholarship Committee will begin its work in the spring and that another committee member is needed. The Nominating Committee was represented by Phyllis Tippit and was given the responsibility to search for a candidate for the office of chapter historian.
There were no reports from the Honorary and Alumni Members Committee, the Audit Committee, or the Publicity Committee. The Intellectual Activities Committee was recognized for its efforts in administering the Wallace Daniel Prize for Undergraduate Writing which is awarded at the spring initiation banquet. Dr. Johnson then reported that the chapter had not been assigned a Visiting Scholar from the national office for this academic year.
Pres. Mazé urged those in attendance to consult the chapter website for information about chapter activities, membership, committee assignments and minutes of meetings. www.baylor.edu/phibetakappa. With an expression of thanks to the members present, the meeting was adjourned at 4:40 pm.
