Dr. Alfredo Colman
Assistant Professor of Musicology/Ethnomusicology
ALFREDO C. COLMAN (Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2005) is an assistant professor in musicology/ethnomusicology. He is a Latin Americanist with a strong interest in the academic and traditional musical repertoires of Paraguay and other Latin American countries, as well as in liturgical music from Colonial Latin America. From the spring of 2001 to the fall of 2002 Dr. Colman served as professor of music at the Ateneo Paraguayo in Asunción and at the Universidad Evangélica del Paraguay in San Lorenzo, where he returns periodically to teach courses and seminars at the School of Music. From 2005 to the spring of 2006 he was a music lecturer at Southwestern University, Georgetown, and at the University of Texas at Austin, where he returned to teach in the spring of 2007.
In addition to forthcoming articles for the “Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World,” Alfredo Colman has published in Latin American Music Review and the Folk Harp Journal. Professor Colman has also authored scholarly liner notes for “Maiteí América: Harps of Paraguay” on the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label and has co-authored with Baylor professor William Casey, "Thomas Robinson's New Citharen Lessons, 1609," (Waco: Baylor University Press, 1997) a critical edition of Robinson's tutor for the Renaissance cittern in England. Dr. Colman's current research focuses on the Paraguayan harp and its music, the musical contributions of 20th century Paraguayan academic composers, and on music and identity in Texas.
As a collaborative harpsichordist and pianist, Alfredo Colman has performed in concert in Asunción, Austin, Fort Worth, Nashville, and San Juan. His principal teachers have been Esther Granjé de Pangrazio, Bella Lidia Giménez de Ocampo, and María Luisa Baez de Ros (piano, Paraguay), Linda Ford and Michael Ard (piano, U.S.A.), and Richard Shadinger and Christina Edelen (harpsichord, U.S.A.). Along with pianist Maimy Fong, Alfredo Colman has formed Doppio, a piano duo ensemble devoted to the performance of traditional and non-traditional works for one and two pianos. Colman and Fong have been concertizing in Central Texas since 1999. Dr. Colman also serves as music and worship director at First Baptist Church, Wells Branch, in Austin.
