Curriculum

Undergraduate Music History Core

The core of the undergraduate music history curriculum is a four-semester survey covering Western music from its beginnings in the ancient world through the latest new developments. We also offer courses on music in world cultures, American popular music, jazz history and the literature of opera, all of which are open to both music majors and non-majors. For non-majors, we offer an Introduction to Music class that can be applied to the General Education Fine Arts requirement.

Graduate Level Courses

At the graduate level, we offer seminars on each major period of music, as well as a research methods course and specialized seminars on historical topics. The Master of Music degree in music history may be pursued either on its own or in combination with another graduate specialty.
