Randy and Phyllis Patterson of San Antonio have been selected as Baylor University's Parents of the Year for 2003. The Pattersons were honored Sept. 13 during halftime of the Baylor vs. SMU football game.
"We are pleased to present the Pattersons with the Parents of the Year honor," said Judy Maggard, director of parent programs. "They have shown unsurpassed leadership in the San Antonio area and are loyal supporters of Baylor University and the Baylor Parents League."
Current Baylor students are given the opportunity to nominate their parents for the Baylor Parents of the Year recognition. Nominations are received by the Parents League office, and parents are selected on the basis of their service and loyalty to Baylor University.
The Pattersons both graduated from Baylor, earning their bachelor's degrees in 1974. Randy received his juris doctorate from Baylor Law School in 1975 and has been an attorney in private practice in San Antonio for 27 years, specializing in oil and gas. Phyllis was a speech pathologist for six years and has taught aerobic dancing for 27 years.
The Pattersons have two sons: Clint, a junior at Baylor, who is a member of the Baylor Chamber of Commerce and served this year on the Welcome Week Steering Committee, and Sam, a senior at Winston Churchill High School and captain of the varsity basketball team.
The Pattersons are life members of the Baylor Alumni Association and members of the Development Council, the Founders Club and the Bear Foundation. They served as the San Antonio-area chair of the Student Life Complex Campaign and are currently the San Antonio representatives to the Baylor Parents League. Randy has served as a district director of the Alumni Association, Phyllis has been a continuous member of the Women's Athletic Cabinet since 1991, and both are now involved in First Call Prayer Group and the newly created Baylor Student Life Advisory Council.
The Pattersons are active members of Trinity Baptist Church, serving as deacons, leading the Get Acquainted class and taking part in the New Member Ministry and the Prayer Ministry. Randy also has served on the Committee on Nominations for Institution Boards of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Phyllis has been actively involved in North East ISD PTA and Faculty Appreciation through the years. Randy has served as a director and president of the Bluffview of Camino Real Homeowners Association. They are both currently serving as representatives in the Churchill Sports Association.
