Baylor’s Allbritton Art Institute to Host Biennial Artist Convention

WACO, Texas (Sept. 25, 2017) – Art critic Jason Kaufman and twin artists Doug and Mike Starn will be discussing their careers and the influence of art on their lives at the 2017 Allbritton Art Institute Biennial Artist Conversation. The event will take place at 7 p.m., Sept. 18 in Roxy Grove Hall.
Kaufman will interview the Starn brothers and discuss their collaborative approach to their careers as artists. Doug and Mike Starn are renowned for their out-of-the-box approach to artwork, notably their combination of traditionally separate disciplines such as photography, sculpture and architecture.
“I’m excited to be bringing this caliber of artists and critic to Waco,” said Adair McGregor, events, acquisitions and assets manager of the Allbritton Art Institute. “Normally, seeing artists like the Starns or art critics like Kaufman would only be possible in a big city at a major museum accompanying an exhibition opening.”
The identical twins, born in 1961, have been working together since the age of 13. Prior to moving to New York City to pursue their careers in the 1980s, the brothers studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Today, their work is featured in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Moderna Museet in Stockholm and others.
Kaufman currently serves as the strategic advisor for the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York. In this role, Kaufman provides conceptual and editorial support on media relations, community outreach and overall development. His work has been published in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.
The Allbritton Art Institute plays a major role as part of Baylor University's Department of Art program, planning and implementing a variety of enrichments and activities. Baylor is able to offer invaluable experiences, such as these conversations, through the work of the institute and faculty such as McGregor.
“The Biennial Artist Conversation gives the students and faculty of the art department, and other members of the Baylor community, a unique opportunity to hear from world renowned artists,” McGregor said. “Our goal is to afford the opportunity for people to engage in the art world and learn about some of the best work it has to offer directly from the artists.”
This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited to 500. Its venue, Roxy Grove Hall is located within the Waco Hall Complex at 624 Speight Ave. A reception will follow in the Waco Hall lobby.
