WACO, Texas (March 10, 2017) – This week, Baylor University will host several notable speakers and events, including a presentation by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the annual Beall Poetry Festival.
MONDAY, March 13
Chapel Highlights – Soulfruit, a music group delivering a message of hope and joy with intricate harmonies and exuberant choreography, will perform in Chapel at 9:05, 10:10 and 11:15 a.m. For more information and a list of future Chapel speakers, visit the Chapel website.
ISR Symposium on China – A symposium covering the topic, “A Relationship in Transition: The Christian Church and China,” will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Paul Powell Chapel at George W. Truett Theological Seminary, 1100 S. Third St. This event, hosted by Baylor’s Institute for Studies of Religion (ISR), is free and open to the public.

TUESDAY, March 14
Mayborn Brain Awareness – The department of psychology and neuroscience will host a Brain Awareness Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mayborn Museum Complex, 1300 S. University Parks Drive. Visitors will have the opportunity to build brain cells out of candy and witness an electrophysiology experiment.
Society of Women Engineers Guest Speaker – David E. Garland, Ph.D., interim president of Baylor University, will speak on equality and spirituality in STEM fields at 7 p.m. in Room 109 of Rogers Engineering and Computer Science Building, 105 Baylor Ave. For more information, visit the ECS website.

Beall Poetry Festival – The 23rd annual Beall Poetry Festival, featuring contemporary poets, readings, a panel discussion and the Virginia Beall Ball Lecture on Contemporary Poetry, will take place March 15-17, with events at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day. CASPER Lecture – Marlan O. Scully, Ph.D., Distinguished Research Academician of Science and Engineering at Baylor University and professor at Texas A&M University and Princeton University, will speak on “Entropy: Classical and Quantum” at 4 p.m. in Room 3160 of the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative (BRIC), 100 Research Parkway. Science Thursdays – Scott James, Ph.D., assistant professor of geosciences, will speak on “Algae: A Promising Future” at 7 p.m. at the Mayborn Museum Complex, 1300 S. University Parks Drive. Coffee and cookies will be provided at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
ISR Lecture – Amir Hussain, Ph.D., professor of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, will speak on “Muslims and the Making of America” at 3:30 p.m. in McClinton Auditorium (Room 240) of the Paul L. Foster Campus for Business and Innovation, 1621 S. Third St. This lecture, hosted by the Institute for Studies of Religion, is free and open to the public. 
Calvin Studies Conference – The 2017 Colloquium: “Calvin and the Early Reformation” will take place March 16-18 at Baylor University. 
Jean Elshtain Library Dedication – A conference, hosted by the Institute for Faith and Learning, honoring the life and work of Jean Elshtain on the occasion of the donation of her library to Baylor University will be March 16-17. For more information, visit the IFL website.
Latin America Film Series – The film “NO” will be shown at 7 p.m. in Room 202 of Tidwell Bible Building, 600 Speight Ave. The film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles. This event is free and open to the public.
United States Air Force Thunderbirds Presentation – The Baylor Institute for Air Science will host a presentation by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds at 6 p.m. in Kayser Auditorium (Room 101) of Hankamer Academic Center, 1428 S. Robert T. Miller Lecture Series – Robert P. George, Ph.D., McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University, will speak at 7:30 p.m. on the topic “Constitutional Structure and Civic Virtues” in Bennett Auditorium in Draper Academic Building, 1420 S. The 150th Anniversary of the Chisholm Trail - Mayborn Museum Complex hosts a two day celebration Thursday, March 16, and Friday, March 17. A trick roper performance, live music and other activities and demonstrations will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and a lecture on how barbed wire ended the Chisholm Trail will be at 11 a.m. Friday. The Mayborn is at 1300 S. University Parks Drive in Waco. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for children. Admission is free for museum members and Baylor students. Jean Bethke Elshtain Memorial Symposium – A symposium honoring Jean Bethke Elshtain will be held at 10 a.m. in Cox Lecture Hall in Armstrong Browning Library, 710 Speight Ave. A panel discussion will honor her career and dedicate the Jean Bethke Elshtain book collection, which her family donated to Baylor University. This event is free and open to the public.
Biology Seminar – Carl Gregory, Ph.D., associate professor at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Texas A&M University Health Science Center, will speak on “Biology of Mesenchymal Stem Cells” at 2:30 p.m. in Room D109 of the Baylor Sciences Building, 101 Bagby Ave.
