WACO, Texas (March 4, 2013) - A team of MBA students from Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business ranked No. 2 at the 2013 Illinois MBA Strategy Case Competition, hosted by the University of Illinois, Feb. 7 to Feb. 9.
Teams from Penn State, the University of Minnesota and Hong Kong University were among the 10 MBA programs represented at the competition. The University of Connecticut earned first place honors, followed by Baylor at second and Purdue University at third.
Baylor was represented by Andrew Masotta, Cherri Sanchez, Bobby Lewellen and Thomas Totoe. The latter two students were awarded Best Q&A, while Sanchez earned an individual award for Best Presenter. "Our team is certainly grateful to have competed, represented Baylor well and to have won some hardware," said Masotta, a 2013 MBA candidate from Grand Rapids, Mich.
The competition presents each team with the same business case and, after 24 hours of reading and analyzing the case, the teams make a presentation to a panel of judges. Each team has 25 minutes to present in the preliminary "pool" rounds. Thereafter, one finalist from each pool is selected to give a 20-minute presentation in the final round.
Unlike other competitions in which teams answer judges' questions after finishing the presentation, the Illinois competition allows judges to interject and question team members at any point. "Given the unpredictable timing of the questions, it can be a significant challenge just to finish the presentation in the allotted time," Masotta said.
