Baylor to Host Summer Seminar for College Teachers

Twelve faculty members from different Christian colleges and universities will participate in a seminar dealing with Christian education July 1-26 at Baylor University.
"Contexts for Challenges: The Academic Vocation in the Christian College and University," is the title for the summer seminar funded by the Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts. Sessions will be held in the James Wood Seminar Room in Carroll Library.
The four-week seminar will address the challenges facing Christian teachers in faith-committed institutions in the closing decade of the 20th century. The seminar will focus on these challenges by bringing together 12 faculty members who are committed to teaching in Christian institutions.
Participants in the seminar will be from Incarnate Word College, San Antonio; Concordia University, Austin; Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill.; Whitworth University, Spokane, Wash.; Texas Lutheran College, Seguin; Houston Baptist University, Houston; Lubbock Christian University, Lubbock; Messiah College, Granthan, Pa.; Lyon College, Batesville, Ark.; and Baylor.
Each week of the seminar will be devoted to a subtopic that is directly related to the overall theme.
The keynote speakers will include Dr. Mark Schwehn of Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind.; Dr. Mary C. Boys of Union Theological Seminary in New York City; Dr. James McClendon of Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, Calif.; and Dr. Michael Beaty of Baylor.
Participants will meet in morning seminar sessions to discuss, analyze and evaluate key texts. Afternoons will be devoted to individual reading and writing.
Two evenings of each week will be committed to informal meetings during which participants will have an opportunity to interact on a more personal level and to share insights and perspectives. Each participant will complete a writing project designed for publication which will explore in detail some aspect of the seminar topic.
The Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts is a network of church-related colleges and universities that provides a national forum for exploring issues of common interest. The overall objective of the Lilly Fellows Program is the imaginative reformulation and implementation of an agenda for church-related higher education for the 21st century.
