Baylor to Present Dallas Seminar on Business Ethics May 8April 30, 1996

WACO, Texas - Ethics in business will be discussed at a workshop presented by the North Texas Family Business Forum of Baylor University's Institute for Family Business Wednesday, May 8, at the Double Tree Parkwest, 1590 LBJ Freeway, Dallas.
The 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. program, "The Internals and Externals of Business Ethics," will be led by Dr. Richard C. Chewning, who serves as the Chavanne Professor of Christian Ethics in Business at Baylor's Hankamer School of Business. He will focus on families, business, and the role of ethics in that setting-a topic he describes as "touchy" in today's business and political climate. The half-day seminar includes breakfast and lunch.
Chewning has published numerous books and more than 60 articles on business ethics and is a frequent speaker on the topic at industry and professional associations across the country.
Bob Hughes, program director at the Baylor Institute for Family Business, said, "Given a choice, people would obviously rather do business with an ethical company than an unethical one. Yet ethics, a hot topic in management circles for 15 years, is making no real progress in correcting ethical conduct in the marketplace. Why? Because there is no necessary correlation between knowing what is the right thing to do and in doing what we know to be right." He said Chewning will address that dilemma and whether there are solutions to it.
Keynote speaker at the 12 noon luncheon will be Larry G. Wheeler, president and chief executive officer of Mrs Baird's Bakeries, Inc. Hughes said Wheeler, the first non-family CEO in the history of Mrs Baird's Bakeries, will share his personal values about what makes a strong organization.
