The papers of Alan W. Steelman probably came to Baylor sometime in 1977 after he ran for the Senate. Steelman related in 2001, " Bob Poage approached me on the floor of the House one day after my loss in the US Senate race in 1976 and asked if I would consider giving my papers to the Poage Library. I thought about it and agreed. I had a high regard for him and was also a Baylor graduate. This made it an easy decision." Poage
Legislative Library was dedicated in 1979 so the Steelman Papers were
among the first collections, along with Congressman Poage's, to be housed
there.
