Choral Music Bibliography Named Outstanding

Feb. 1, 2005

Choral Music: A Research and Information Guide by Dr. Avery Sharp and James Michael Floyd was named an Outstanding Academic Title in the January 2002 issue of Choice magazine, published by the American Library Association (ALA). Dr. Sharp is professor and research librarian at Armstrong Browning Library, and Floyd is public services coordinator in Crouch Fine Arts Library.

Choice reviews books, magazines and electronic media used by institutions of higher education. Every year in the January issue, the magazine includes a list of outstanding academic titles reviewed during the previous calendar year. According to the ALA website, 'this prestigious list reflects the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice and brings with it the extraordinary recognition of the academic library community.' The list contains approximately 10 percent of some 6,600 works reviewed each year. Choice selects books based on excellence in scholarship and presentation, importance relative to other literature in the field, originality, value to undergraduate students, and importance in building library collections.

The review in Choice describes the authors as 'well known in the field of choral music.' It notes that 'Choral directors, researchers, students and performers will all want this valuable work in their academic and public libraries.'

The authors' newest bibiliography of church music in the United States is due out in late July. - Katie Dunlap, Library Advancement
