Baylor Libraries Join SCOAP3 Partnership

Feb. 11, 2014

Baylor University Libraries has joined with research libraries around the globe in an experiment in converting an entire discipline to an open access model. SCOAP3 - Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics -- is a unique partnership of libraries, funding agencies, and research centers in two dozen countries.

SCOAP3 is converting key journals in the field of high-energy physics to open access. In contrast to other open access models, the published versions of SCOAP3 articles are openly available to researchers anywhere, and without author fees. SCOAP3 collects fees from funders and pays publishers for the costs involved in providing open access. The fees libraries pay to SCOAP3 are based on a formula, and come from reductions in the subscription fees publishers charge their SCOAP3 customers.
