Education Alliance, Speaker Promote Parental InvolvementJune 27, 2011
Dr. Rita Pierson hopes to help parents and their children know that they can go beyond the norm--as she says, getting ahead in a world where many try just to get by. That's part of her message when she talks to parents in communities across Texas, a message she now brings to Waco. She'll be addressing community parents at two Waco locations tonight and tomorrow.
It's part of a push by the Greater Waco Community Education Alliance to provide resources for parents, with this being just one of many events or initiatives in the coming months designed to bring about a greater involvement by parents in their child's education. Executive Director Virginia DuPuy.
To that end, they brought in Dr. Rita Pierson from the Aha! Process out of the Houston area, an organization that helps people understand the impact of poverty and how to overcome it. Dr. Pierson said many parents in poverty don't fully recognize the ability they have to influence their children.
The free events run both evenings at 6:30, with tonight's taking place at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, and tomorrow's at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. To make it easier for parents and encourage them to come, childcare with activities is provided and door prizes will be awarded. DuPuy said similar events will take place in the fall, once school is underway, part of a continual effort to, as Dr. Pierson said, help parents get ahead and not just get by.
