Students in their junior or senior year of high school who have qualified for entry in any category in the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair may apply for the Ruben Santos Memorial Scholarship to Baylor University. The scholarship provides $1,000 tuition to a student entering Baylor University.
One student per school may be nominated for the Baylor University scholarship. Only students in grades 11 and 12 are eligible for nomination.
Application Form: Students must complete the application form and mail it, together with two letters of recommendation and a writing sample all in one envelope to the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair office.
Nomination letters: Two letters of nomination are required. One letter must be written by the nominee's sponsoring teacher, and one letter by the nominee's high school principal or high school counselor.
These letters should explain the nominee's eligibility for the scholarship award, based on the information provided on the application form. Letters may include any other information about the student's qualification for the award.
Writing sample: Student nominees must submit an essay in which they explain
ways they think participation in the history fair program benefits students and
their reasons for wanting to attend Baylor University.
The writing sample may be printed or neatly handwritten; if printed, it should not exceed two pages. The essay should be between 150 and 500 words in length.
Interview: Applications for the scholarship will be reviewed by a panel of Baylor faculty, and selected applicants (no more than three) will be invited to an interview with the scholarship selection committee during the regional history fair at Baylor on Friday. The students to be interviewed will be notified of the time and place of the interview by noon Thursday of the fair.
In addition to the information on the application form, the selection committee will consider applicants' academic record in high school, recommendations written by students' history fair sponsors and high school principals or counselors, and students' demonstrated interest in attending Baylor University.
The scholarship recipient will be announced at the annual Heart of Texas Regional History Fair awards ceremony, which begins at approximately 5:00 p.m. Friday at the HOTRHF Awards Ceremony.
The $1,000 Ruben Santos Memorial Baylor University scholarship is limited to tuition remission only and may not be used to pay for books, housing, or fees. To be eligible for the tuition award, a student must meet all of the admission requirements of Baylor University, must apply for admission to Baylor through regular procedures, must be accepted into Baylor, and must register for Baylor classes before the scholarship goes into effect.
The student should report receipt of the scholarship in any application for a financial aid package at Baylor University.
