Alumni SpotlightJan. 11, 2004Timothy G. Fehler (B.A., 1988) is associate professor of history at Furman University where he specializes in European and British history. Dr. Fehler received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and is the author of Poor Relief and Protestantism: The Evolution of Social Welfare in Sixteenth-Century Emden (Ashgate, 1999). This past year he was honored with the Alester G. Furman, Jr., and Janie Earle Furman Award for Meritorious Teaching. In receiving this distinction, Tim recognized the influence of Dr. James W. Vardaman in inspiring him toward graduate work in history. (See accompanying letter).
Joseph Richard Hurt (M.A., 1978; J.D., 1979) became Dean of the Florida Coastal School of Law following a twenty-one year career on the faculty of the law school at Mississippi College in Jackson. Richard was named Outstanding Young Lawyer in Mississippi by the Young Lawyers Division of the Mississippi Bar in 1990, and six years later he received the Mississippi Supreme Court's Chief Justice Award in recognition of his distinguished career in public service. Prior to his investiture at Florida Coastal, he served as Dean of the Mississippi Law School for seven years, held an appointment as Deputy Consultant on Legal Education to the American Bar Association, and taught as a Visiting Professor of Law at Indiana University-Indianapolis. As a master's student at Baylor, Hurt wrote a thesis entitled "Recent Biographical Interpretations of Oliver Cromwell, 1651-1658" under the direction of Professor James W. Vardaman.
David B. Stricklin (B.A., ;M.A., 1978), assistant professor of history at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas was named the 1999 Arkansas Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. David joined the faculty at Lyon in 1996, after receiving his Ph.D. from Tulane University. His areas of specialization include southern culture, American religion, vernacular music, and oral history. He is the author of A Genealogy of Dissent: Southern Baptist Protest in the Twentieth Century (University Press of Kentucky, 2000) and the forthcoming Southern Music/American Music, co-authored with Bill C. Malone. As an M.A. student in history at Baylor, Dr. Stricklin wrote a thesis under the direction of Professor Thomas Charlton entitled "The Development of the Musical Career of Bob Wills, 1929-1938: Folk Forces and Commercialization." Prior to entering the doctoral program at Tulane, David was a staff member in the Institute for Oral History.
