Undergraduate Programs

The department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers six different majors:

Child & Family Studies

The Child and Family Studies program focuses on the development of families and individuals as they grow and change. Emphasis is placed on the strengths of individuals and families as seen in diverse systems and settings. Our program equips students with knowledge, skills and ethics--both in the classroom and in the field--to serve and lead societal opportunities to empower families.

Apparel Design & Product Development

The Apparel Design curriculum focus is to help students develop into professionals that will be successful in both the domestic and international market place. Fashion design is the development of apparel and textile products that meet the needs of specific consumer markets. Students develop an understanding of these needs through the study of consumer behavior, demographics and psychographics.

Apparel Merchandising

Apparel Merchandising encompasses apparel and softgoods retailing and manufacturing processes in a global marketplace. Retail buying, trend analysis, forecasting, textile science, visual display and promotion are a part of the field as well.

General Family & Consumer Sciences

This major teaches students about issues that affect individuals, families, and communities with special attention to issues that relate to the basic needs of food, shelter, clothing, and relationships. Students examine personal and family life across the life span as they merge the challenges of living and working in a diverse, global society.

Interior Design

In this major, students explore the relationships between people and space, as they learn how to design commercial, institutional, recreational and residential facilities. Students develop competency in specific interior design subject areas such as graphic communication, theory, lighting, environmental technology, interior materials, and interior construction systems as they learn how to creatively solve interior design problems.

Nutrition Sciences

Nutrition Sciences is the study of food, its components and how the body handles food substances. In this major, you'll explore how nutrients, and the foods from which they are derived, aid the body in growth and development and in maintaining health and wellness. You'll have a chance to see how concepts from microbiology and chemistry impact food preparation and safety.
