Degree Plan

Requirements for a Major in Linguistics

Twenty-seven semester hours including the following:

A. Twelve hours of these core courses:

ENG 3310: Introduction to Language & Linguistics

ENG 4303: Contemporary Syntax

ENG 4312: Semantics/Pragmatics

ENG 4315: Phonetics/Phonology

B. Twelve semester hours selected from the following list of electives:

ENG 3301: English Words

ENG 3305: Language in Society

ENG 4302: Old English Language

ENG 4304: History of the English Language

ENG 4306: Cross-Cultural Linguistics

ENG 4308: 2nd Language Acquisition/ESL

ENG 4317: Special Topics in Linguistics*

ENG 4V17: Independent Study in Linguistics

*ENG 4317 may be repeated once for credit toward the Linguistics degree with a change in topic and consent of the instructor

C. Three additional semester hours selected from any of the courses not counted above or selected from the following courses:

ENG 3302: English Grammar

CSD 2318: Language Development

TED 4312: Methods of teaching

SPA/FRE/GER 4315: Methods of teaching ESL

PHI 4345: Intermediate Logic

PHI 4353: Philosophy of Language

PSY 3311: Cognitive Psychology

IV. Required Courses in Other Fields:

Familiarity with the linguistic systems and structure of at least two foreign languages must be demonstrated, one of which must be non-western European (GKC, RUS, CHI, HEB, IND, JPN, KOR, THAI, SWA, ARB, ARBB). Complete both of the following requirements:

A. One or more non-western languages (GKC, RUS, CHI, HEB, IND, JPN, KOR, THAI, SWA, ARB, ARBB) -- Complete one option from the following:

1. Complete one non-western language through 2320, OR

2. Complete two non-western languages through 1302/1402 in each.

B. An additional language through 2320 selected from: FRE, GER, ITA, POR, SPA, GKC, LAT, RUS, CHI, HEB, IND, JPN, KOR, THAI, SWA, ARB, ARBB.

Note: Courses must be limited to those that apply toward the language requirement or the major in that language; non-translation courses will not apply here.

Requirements for a Minor in Linguistics

Eighteen semester hours including the following:

A. Twelve hours of these required courses:

ENG 3310: Introduction to Language & Linguistics

ENG 4303: Contemporary Syntax

ENG 4312: Semantics/Pragmatics

ENG 4315: Phonetics/Phonology

B. Six hours selected from the following:

ENG 3301: English Words

ENG 3305: Language in Society

ENG 4304: History of the English Language

ENG 4306: Cross-Cultural Linguistics

ENG 4308: 2nd Language Acquisition/ESL

ENG 4317: Special Topics in Linguistics
