Spyware and Virus Information

What is spyware and why should I care about it?
Spyware and adware are programs that are installed on your computer (often without your knowledge) that keep track of your internet browsing. Spyware and adware installed on your computer can often cause slowness, pop-up windows, and other abnormal computer behavior.

How does spyware differ from a virus?
Viruses and spyware are both forms of malware. Malware infections can corrupt files, alter or delete data, distribute confidential data, disable hardware, deny legitimate user access, and cause a hard drive to crash.

How can I prevent spyware and viruses?
You need to take two key steps to ensure your computer is protected:

  • Up-to-date Anti-virus
The key is to have up-to-date anti-virus software on your computer. If you do not keep it updated, it will not protect your computer.

Baylor University provides Symantec Endpoint Protection to all students, along with updates for the entire time you attend the university. Symantec Endpoint Protection detects and removes many viruses and spyware.

On-campus residents are required to install and run Symantec Endpoint Protection, as it is the only way to help ensure your computer remains protected from virus threats. It will be installed for you when you connect to the residential network (https://restech.baylor.edu) for the first time.

  • Microsoft Windows Update
Having an up-to-date operating system is vital to protecting your computer. Microsoft frequently releases new patches for its software that helps protect your computer from malicious software and helps the operating system to run properly.

Running Windows Update is very easy. Simply visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, click the Express button, and follow the on-screen instructions.

If I think I have spyware, how can I remove it?
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an excellent program for removing malware and spyware. It can be downloaded (for free) from malwarebytes.org. Keep in mind that uninstalling spyware may cause some programs, such as KaZaa, to stop functioning. To use Malwarebytes, follow the instructions below:

  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    1. After downloading and installing Malwarebytes, open the program and click the "Update" tab and click "Check for Updates."
    2. Click the "Scanner" tab and make sure "Perform quick scan" is selected.
    3. Click "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
    4. Click "Remove Selected" after deselecting anything you know is a false positive.
    5. The selected infections should now be removed.
