Hope (spes)

SG Hope

Hope is closely allied to courage. Hannah, in her barrenness and desperation, prayed to God for a son, which she promised through hope to give for the Lord's service in the temple. Pictured here with Samuel, Hannah reminds us that hope guides us between despair and presumption, drawing us toward the highest and best that God makes possible for us. Beneath these biblical figures, the artist has portrayed Dorothy Day, a great twentieth century Catholic who served among the poor, marginalized, and oppressed. To this day, the Catholic Worker Movement that she began calls us to serve the needy in such a way that they find hope in Christ to be efficacious for the reordering of life here and now, as well as at the end of time.
