Scope and Content
The Joseph Martin Dawson Papers came to The Texas Collection through multiple accessions. The date of the original gift is unknown, but as early as 1974, materials were arriving from Baylor University's Oral History Institute. In 1975, Mrs. Dave Cheavens and Matthew Dawson donated additional materials. The largest accession was transferred to The Texas Collection from the J.M. Dawson Institute for Church-State Studies in 2013 March.

The Joseph Martin Dawson Papers, as the collection currently stands, span from 1826 to 1989 in chronology, but the bulk of the materials focus on the professional life of Joseph Dawson (1879-1973).

The two largest series in the collection are Series I. Correspondence and Series II. Literary Productions. Series I. Correspondence contains letters to and from Dawson concerning family matters, his various pastorates, his publications, and religion in the public sphere. Series II. Literary Productions consist of Dawson's own written works including books, sermons, and articles.

Series III: Collected materials consist of works published by others. Series IV: Subject files contain various types of material and range in scope from Dawson's personal research to his involvement in organizations such as the Texas Institute of Letters and Protestants and Other Americans United for the Separation of Church and State.

The final three series in the collection are smaller in size. Series V. Photographic Materials focuses primarily on Joseph Dawson, his wife Willie, and other family members. Series VI. Three-Dimensional Objects are comprised of awards, plaques, and academic regalia belonging to Dawson. The final series consists of fourteen scrapbooks, primarily comprised of clippings, which deal with Baptists, Texas history, Dawson's churches, and other prominent issues of the day.

Biography/Profile
Joseph Martin Dawson was born on 1879 June 21 in Maypearl, Texas, to Laura Underwood and Martin Judy Dawson, Jr. On 1908 June 3, at the age of twenty-eight, Dawson married Willie Turner (1888-1963), with whom he had five children: Alice, Leighton Brooks, Joseph Turner, Ralph Matthew, and Donna Booch.

Dawson was raised in the Baptist church and made a public profession of faith at age thirteen at the Central Baptist Church of Italy, Texas. As a young man, Dawson entered Baylor Academy in order to prepare for the ministry, graduating with an A.B. in 1900. Dawson then attended Baylor University, from which he earned his B.A. in 1904. In 1900, while a student at the university, Dawson founded and edited The Lariat—which remains the student newspaper to this day. He also received a few honorary degrees: a D.D. from Baylor University in 1917, an L.L.D. from Howard Payne College in 1936, and a Ph.D. from Saints Peter and Paul Seminary in 1940.

After showing early promise as a journalist, Dawson decided instead to become a minister. He held his first pastorates—in the Texas towns of South Fork, Red Oak, Newcomb, and Hewitt—simultaneously with his studies at Baylor University. He also pastored First Baptist Church of Lampasas (1904-1906), First Baptist Church of Hillsboro (1908-1912), and First Baptist Church of Temple (1912-1915). Dawson’s longest pastorate was of the influential First Baptist Church of Waco, from which pulpit he served from 1915 to 1946.

Dawson was a prominent Baptist leader in Texas, across the United States, and even worldwide. He held many influential positions within the denomination, including those of vice president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas (1922) and chairman of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee (1945-1946). In 1945, Dawson and three others represented Baptists at the formation of the United Nations. Dawson presented a petition bearing more than 100,000 signatures asking that a declaration of religious liberty be included in the United Nations Charter. One of Dawson’s most important leadership roles was as the first Executive Director of the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs (BJCPA), which he renamed, reorganized, and rejuvenated. He served as director from 1946 to 1953.

Dawson was also dedicated to education and learning. In 1946, he helped to establish the Texas Institute of Letters and was later inducted as a member. For thirty years Dawson served on the Baylor University Board of Trustees. He held similar positions at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Religious liberty and the separation of church and state were among Dawson’s chief interests throughout his life and his most enduring legacies after his death. Dawson believed that religious liberty lay at the heart of the liberties enshrined in the United States Bill of Rights. Dawson was a founder and first Executive Director (1947-1948) of Protestants and Other Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (which later became Americans United for the Separation of Church and State). In 1951, he led the successful effort to oppose President Harry S. Truman’s appointment of an American ambassador to the Vatican. Similarly, Dawson opposed federal aid to parochial schools and church-affiliated hospitals, as well as sectarian education in public schools. Dawson wrote much on church-state issues, including the books Separate Church and State Now (1948) and America’s Way in Church, State and Society (1953). In 1957, Baylor University recognized Dawson’s labors in this field through the creation of the J.M. Dawson Studies in Church and State. After Dawson’s death, James E. Wood, Jr., founding editor of the Journal of Church & State and former director of the J.M. Dawson Studies in Church and State, wrote of Dawson: "More than any other person in his day he influenced his own denomination toward a recommitment to religious liberty and the separation of church and state."

From his early forays into journalism until his final years, Dawson was a prolific writer and active editor. As a young man, Dawson wrote for the Dallas Morning News and served as the first editor of the Western Evangel (1906). Dawson also edited the Baptist Standard from 1907 to 1908. As Executive Director of the BJCPA, Dawson established and edited the Report from the Capitol. Dawson served on the Editorial Council of the Journal of Church & State from 1959 until his death. In addition to his work as an editor, Dawson wrote countless articles and a dozen books. His writings spanned religious, political, social, and historical topics. In 1964, Dawson published an autobiography entitled A Thousand Months to Remember. He remained a productive author until the final years of his life, publishing his final book—Jose Antonio Navarro: Co-Creator of Texas—when he was ninety years old.

Dawson died in Corsicana, Texas on 1973 July 6. He is buried alongside his wife, Willie Turner, in Waco’s Oakwood Cemetery.

Archival Arrangement
The Joseph Martin Dawson Papers was created through a series of seven accessions. The condition of each gift differed dramatically before this latest round of processing. Some of the materials were well-organized according to type of material and were housed in acid-free document boxes. Partial inventories and folder listings existed for this portion of the collection.

However, some accessions lacked any apparent organization and were not foldered. The collection was greatly expanded on the acceptance of the seventh acquisition, a transfer of twelve banker's boxes from the J.M Dawson Institute for Church State Studies.

There were four incomplete inventories of the materials prior to processing, so the first step in processing was to create a comprehensive inventory of all the Dawson items. This completed, the collection was then organized into seven series: I. Correspondence, II. Literary Productions, III. Collected Materials, IV. Subject Files, V. Photographic Materials, VI. Three-Dimensional Objects, and VII. Scrapbooks.
