Also included are photos of the day of the founding and dedication of the Dawson Institute.

The Correspondence series contains Dr. Wood’s letters with friends, colleagues, and members of international institutions. This series also includes interdepartmental correspondence between Dawson Institute staff. Documents range from 1957-2000.

Biography/Profile
Dr. James E. Wood, Jr. was born on July 29, 1922, the oldest of three children born to James and Elsie Bryant Wood of Portsmouth, Virginia. After graduating high school, Wood attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. During his first year of undergraduate study, he met his future wife, Alma Leacy McKenzie. They married after graduating from Carson-Newman College, and had one son, James E. Wood III. Throughout his undergraduate career, Wood served as pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church in Lake City, Tennessee. Later, while attending seminary, Wood was pastor of several different churches throughout Kentucky and Tennessee.

Wood continued his education following his graduation from Carson-Newman: he earned his Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in New York City, and his Master of Theology and Bachelor of Divinity degrees, as well as his Doctorate, from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Towards the end of his schooling, the Wood family prepared to go on a mission trip to China to teach English at the University of Shanghai, but political strife in China at the time made this impossible. Instead, he accepted a position as a professor of religion and literature at Seinan Gakuin (Baptist) University in Fukuoka, Japan.

In 1955, after spending a short time in Japan, Baylor University offered Wood a position as an associate professor of religious history. He accepted, and became known as one of the most active faculty members on campus, emphasizing mission work in his courses. By 1957, he became director of Baylor’s new Studies in Missions and Comparative Religions program. Also in 1957, the J. M. Dawson Institute of Church-State Studies (previously the J. M. Dawson Studies in Church and State) was founded. Wood, along with E. Bruce Thompson from the history department, and Robert T. Miller from the political science department, was commissioned to author the Institute’s first major project, the publication of a book on Church-State studies. Wood, Thompson, and Miller coauthored Church and State in Scripture, History, and Constitutional Law, a landmark achievement for the new institute. Shortly after the publication of this book in 1958, Wood became director of the Dawson Institute.

Under Wood’s direction, the Dawson Institute for Church-State Studies achieved many important goals. During his first tenure as director, the Institute developed several undergraduate and graduate courses, culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy program. Wood and his colleagues launched the Journal of Church and State, the only academic journal dedicated to Church-State issues at the time. J. M. Dawson Church-State Research Center, which housed several thousand books and documents, was also opened.

In 1972, Wood left Baylor in order to accept a position as director of the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs in Washington, D.C. While he was director, the committee expanded its scope and goals beyond just protecting Baptist interests to include more widespread issues of religious liberty and human rights. Wood returned to his position at Baylor after serving as director for eight years.

Dr. Wood was internationally renowned for his knowledge on issues dealing with church and state. As a result, his expertise was requested to help with various national and international issues. Wood served on various religious liberties committees, such as the World Council of Churches Committee on Religious Liberty, the First World Congress on Religious Liberty, and the International Academy for Freedom of Religion and Belief, of which he was president. He served as a consultant to many Eastern European countries following the collapse of the Soviet Union, advising them on the creation of new religious freedom laws. Wood received many awards, including the Religious Liberty Award by the Alliance for the Preservation of Religious Liberty.
