Please note that there are two independent programs discussed below. Please read the following carefully!

CASPER's Summer High School Scholars Program (sponsored by Baylor University, TSTC and CASPER) provides AP high school students (juniors and seniors) access to an inter-disciplinary hands-on training environment through concurrent enrollment coursework in computer interfacing, computer diagnostics, vacuum systems, and electro-optics components. Additionally, students are divided into work teams and routed through CASPER's Space Science Lab and Hypervelocity Impacts & Dusty Plasmas Lab, working alongside National Science Foundation undergraduate REU fellows, graduate students, and schoolteachers funded through the National Science Foundation's RET program. High schoolers experience the HIDPL's meso and nanoscale structure formation lab, diagnostics, laser, and accelerator labs and attend seminars with CASPER leadership focusing on current topics in nanoscale physics, plasma physics or space science.

Potential Research Areas

Current theoretical research areas within the Center include astrophysics, cosmology, meso and nanoscale physics, complex plasmas, hypervelocity impact physics, protoplanetary development studies, quantum gravity, shock physics, superstrings and dusty plasma physics. Current experimental research areas in the Center include meso and nanoscale structure formation, hypervelocity impact physics, in-situ sensor design studies, laser plasma production studies, shock physics and dusty plasma physics.

Scholars interested in theoretical research can study a variety of projects within the Center such as the computer modeling of protoplanetary and planetary ring systems, ordered structure formation and electromagnetic wave scattering within complex plasmas or string theory and early universe cosmology. In the experimental areas, Scholars can choose to work in one of four active labs. In the Hypervelocity Impacts & Dusty Plasmas Lab (HIDPL) students can study hypervelocity impacts using a laser hypervelocity impact simulation system or structure formation within one of two plasma reference systems. In the Space Science Lab (SSL) Scholars can learn about flight system instrumentation, diagnostic and calibration using either a light gas accelerator or an electrostatic accelerator.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Current juniors and seniors in high school are eligible. Applicants will be considered for appointment without regard to race, creed, color, sex, national origin, age, handicap status or any other non-merit factor. Appointment selection is competitive on a national scale and will be based upon the following criteria: (1) career objectives and scientific interest, (2) match of applicant interest with available projects within the Center and (3) letters of recommendation. To apply for the CASPER summer high school program, please contact Dr. Truell Hyde directly at the address given below. This program has limited funding. A maximum of two Fellows are selected each year as funding permits.

Baylor High School Summer Science Program

Applicants can also apply to work within CASPER for the summer by choosing CASPER as their research choice through the Baylor High School Summer Science Program. Please note that this program is completely separate from the CASPER program described above and has its own application requirements and deadlines. This program is highly competitive on a national scale and is operated out of the Office of the Dean of the College of A&S. More information as well as application materials for the Baylor High School Summer Science Program can be found at Baylor University's High School Summer Science Research Fellowship Program.
