GENERAL POLICIES

  1. Your valid Baylor ID card is required for entrance to the McLane Student Life Center. (Baylor IDs are non-transferable.)
  2. Guests must register and complete a liability waiver upon entrance to the facility.
  3. Guests under 16 years of age are granted access only during family hours and must be accompanied by parent or guardian at all times.
  4. Guests under the age of 18 must have a liability waiver signed by their parent.
  5. Participation is at your own risk.
  6. No smoking, chewing tobacco or alcohol is allowed.
  7. No food, gum, or beverages are allowed in the activity areas.
  8. Appropriate attire is required in each activity area. (Please see specific policies for activity areas later in this document.)
  9. Bicycles must be parked outside.
  10. Roller blades, skateboards, scooters and "heelies" may not be used inside the building.
  11. Baylor is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.
  12. All accidents must be reported to the SLC Front Desk.
  13. Participants are encouraged to report any maintenance/repair needs to the SLC Front Desk.
  14. Entrance and exit of the facility must be through the designated main entrance and exit.
  15. Failure to abide by the policies outlined herein may result in the loss of facility privileges for a minimum of one (1) calendar day. A Campus Recreation graduate assistant or facility manager has the authority to determine the extent of this loss of privileges in the absence of a full-time, professional staff member.
  16. The Department of Campus Recreation reserves the right to take whatever action necessary to preserve the safety of the patrons and the integrity of the facilities and programs.
  17. Patrons are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that does not distract from or disrupt the recreational pursuits of others. Should a staff member determine that a patron's conduct is being distracting or disruptive, the staff member may impose the patron's immediate removal from the facility until the patron can conduct himself or herself in an appropriate manner. If the staff member is unable to obtain the cooperation of the patron, Baylor Police or the Office of Student Judicial Service may be contacted.

AUTHORIZED PARTICIPANTS

Baylor Students, Faculty, and Staff
Baylor students, faculty, and staff must present a valid Baylor identification card to gain access to the Student Life Center or any other Campus Recreation facility.

Spouses of Baylor Faculty and Staff
Spouses of Baylor faculty and staff must present their Spouse ID card upon entry to the SLC.

Spouses of Baylor Students
Spouses of current Baylor students, and those of Seminary and Law students who have paid the optional Student Life Center Fee, may obtain a spouse card at no charge after registering at the front desk of the SLC. This Campus Recreation spouse card will be required on every visit to the SLC, Marina or Russell Gym.

Dependent Children*

  • Dependent children of Baylor students, faculty and staff will be admitted to the SLC at no charge after registering at the SLC front desk.
  • To qualify for admittance, a Dependent Registration form must be completed at the SLC front desk and a waiver must be signed by the parent or legal guardian before membership card can be issued.
  • Dependent children under 16 years of age are required to have a Campus Recreation Dependent Card and be accompanied by a parent/guardian or an SLC cardholder over 16 years of age.
  • Dependent under 16 may come only during posted Family Hours and must remain with their parent/guardian or an SLC cardholder over 16 years of age throughout their stay in the SLC.
  • Dependent children ages 16-25 must show a Campus Recreation Dependent Card or alternate photo ID card upon entering the facility. They are welcome to use the SLC without direct adult supervision any time the facility is open.
*Dependent Children are considered to be unmarried, dependent upon the employee for more than one-half of his/her support as defined by the Internal Revenue Code of the United States and under 26 years of age or disabled.

Grandchildren

  • Grandchildren of Baylor students, faculty and staff who are under the age of 16 will be admitted to the SLC at no charge.
  • To qualify for admittance, a Grandchild Registration form must be completed at the SLC front desk and a waiver must be signed by the parent or legal guardian before membership card can be issued.
  • Grandchildren are required to present a Campus Recreation Grandchild Card for admittance into the facility and must be accompanied by a Baylor cardholder at all times.
  • Grandchildren may come only during posted Family Hours and must remain with the Baylor cardholder throughout their stay in the SLC.

Age Restrictions

  1. Children under age 16 are limited to a ratio of five minors to one adult, unless they are involved in a scheduled, programmed activity or camp.
  2. Children under the age of 16 may not use the Weight and Fitness Room or any cardiovascular machines at any time.
  3. No one under the age of 18 is allowed to belay a climber on the Climbing Rock.
  4. Children participating in scheduled, programmed activities (e.g. camps, lessons, and tournaments) may only use the SLC to participate in that activity. All programmed events and activities must be scheduled through the Department of Campus Recreation and/or Conference and Event Management Department.
  5. Children under the age of 16 may use the SLC during the posted Family Hours. During the academic year, Family Hours are 5:00PM Fridays through midnight on Sunday. Family Hours are extended to posted SLC hours during Baylor's published holidays, semester breaks, and summer sessions.
  6. Dependents and Grandchildren are not permitted to bring guests.

Adult Guests

  1. Guests MUST be accompanied by a valid Baylor identification card holder while utilizing the facility.
  2. Each guest must register at the Service Desk by completing a Guest Registration Waiver Form. A new form must be submitted on each date the guest enters the facility.
  3. Guest usage is subject to the daily guest fee. Adult Pass (16 years and older): $10.00/day.

Minor Guests (under 18 year of age)

  1. Guests MUST be accompanied by a valid Baylor identification card holder while utilizing the facility.
  2. Each minor guest must register at the Service Desk with a Minor Guest Registration Waiver Form. The form may be obtained at the SLC Service Desk or online and must be signed by the parent. A new form must be signed and submitted on each date the guest enters the facility.
  3. Guest usage is subject to the daily guest fee. Child Pass (15 years and under): $5.00/day.
  4. Minor guests under the age of 16 may utilize the facility during posted Family Hours.
  5. Minor guests between the ages of 16 and 18 may access the facility with their Baylor cardholder during regular hours of operation.
  6. Please note dependent restrictions and family hours.

Special Programs/Group Reservations
All facility reservations for groups within the University will be made by calling Heather Gilliam, at (254) 710-3315. Outside groups must contact Baylor's Conference and Event Management Department at (254) 710-4105.

Reserving Space in the SLC

  1. Groups desiring to reserve space in the SLC will be permitted to make such reservations no earlier than 4 months in advance.
  2. Department of Campus Recreation and Health Services may schedule the facility at any time.
  3. Within 4 months, of scheduled need, the facility is reserved on a first come, first served basis.
  4. Baylor groups must complete a Campus Recreation Facility Request Form.
  5. Outside groups must contact Baylor's Conference and Event Management Department at (254) 710-4105 to reserve space in the SLC.

General Room Use

  1. Groups must leave the room at their scheduled time.
  2. The room is to be left in the same orderly condition in which it was found.
  3. Food and drinks are not permitted in the facility areas, other than the cafe' or outdoor picnic area, without the permission of the Coordinator for Facilities or the Assistant Director for Facilities.
  4. Many groups use the building at the same time. If a scheduled activity is going to involve music, singing, or another activity that may disturb other groups, this should be noted at the time of scheduling.
  5. Fees will be assessed for any misuse or damage to facility areas.
  6. Audio-visual equipment needs must be noted at the time of scheduling.

Advertising and Publicity

  1. Posters or flyers must meet acceptable standards of taste and are subject to approval by Student Activities and the Director of Campus Recreation or his/her representative.
  2. Only Baylor students and student organizations may submit posters or fliers for display at the SLC.
  3. No more than three (3) approved posters or flyers will be placed on designated bulletin boards.
  4. Approved posters and flyers will be posted by SLC employees only.
  5. No posters or flyers are permitted on the exterior of the building.
  6. Tape, or any other adhesive, is not allowed on walls.
  7. Unauthorized posters or flyers will be removed and discarded.
  8. Banner policy:
    1. Departmental events open to all students,
    2. 3' X 9' or smaller,
    3. 3 days (maximum) prior to event,
    4. sponsor supplies Velcro strip, and
    5. SLC staff will hang the banner.
  9. Sandwich board policy:
    1. Departmental events open to all students,
    2. 3' X 4' poster or smaller,
    3. 3 days (maximum) prior to event, and
    4. SLC staff will position poster and sandwich board in the SLC.

Decorations

  1. Glitter and confetti are not permitted in the SLC.
  2. Tape, or any other adhesive, on walls is prohibited.

Facility Behavior

  1. Abusive, vulgar, or disruptive language will not be tolerated.
  2. Fighting is grounds for immediate removal from the facility.
  3. Facilities and equipment should be used for their designated purpose.
  4. Any individual not following appropriate policies or behaviors will be asked to leave the facilities and will be subject to further sanctions.

Food, Beverage & Tobacco Use

  1. Food is only allowed in designated lounge areas of the SLC.
  2. Food is not allowed in the activity areas unless approved for a special function.
  3. No glass or metal containers are allowed in the SLC.
  4. Beverages in plastic containers with re-sealable caps are allowed.
  5. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the premises.
  6. Consumption of alcohol, intoxication, or the appearance/smell of intoxication, will be reason for immediate removal from the SLC.
  7. The SLC is a smoke free facility. Smoking or tobacco use in any form is prohibited.

Clothing & Footwear

  1. For safety reasons, jewelry should not be worn during any activity. Street clothing is not generally permitted during activities as it can be dangerous and confining.
  2. Appropriate athletic attire, such as T-shirts, shorts, warm-up suits, sweat suits, or aerobic clothing, is required at all times during recreation.
  3. Shirts and shoes are required except in locker rooms, pool, and outdoor activity area. (Exception: shirts & skins to identify teams in the gym only.)
  4. Appropriate athletic footwear is required for all athletic areas.
  5. Footwear what marks the floor surfaces or is worn inappropriately is not allowed.
  6. Shower thongs are suggested for use in locker rooms and showers.
  7. Fullback shirts with sleeves and protective footwear are required in weights/fitness area.

Equipment Check-out

  1. Sports equipment, including but not limited to racquetballs, squash balls, racquets, and table tennis paddles, is checked out free of charge to Baylor ID holders with a limit of two hours.
  2. A maximum of three (3) pieces of equipment may be checked out to a Baylor ID holder at one time.
  3. All check-out equipment is intended for use in the SLC or on the Baylor University campus only.
  4. A valid Baylor ID card must be presented at the time of check-out and check-in.
  5. All items must be returned by closing time on the date that they are checked out. If items are not returned, the ID holder responsible for checking out the equipment may be charged.
  6. For group events, equipment may be rented by Baylor student organizations or departments. A Special Event Equipment Rental Request form must be submitted to the SLC Service Desk at least three (3)business days in advance.
  7. All equipment will be inspected upon return. If damages occur, the participant will be responsible for the cost of fixing or replacing the item.

Bicycles, Skateboards, and In-line Skates

  1. Bicycles, Skateboards, and In-line Skates may not be used in the SLC.
  2. Bicycle racks are located outside of the facilities for bicycle parking.

Lost and Found

  1. The SLC is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.
  2. Participants are encouraged to store all personal belongings securely in lockers provided throughout the SLC.
  3. Staff members are not permitted to hold valuables or bags for participants.
  4. Found items should be turned in at the SLC front desk.
  5. Equipment found at all Campus Recreation facilities will be sent to the front desk at the SLC on a daily basis.
  6. Inquiries regarding items lost on that day should be made at the specific location. On the following day inquiries should be made at the SLC Front Desk.
  7. Any items found which appear to be of significant monetary value will be dropped in a safe immediately. Those items can be claimed the following day at the SLC Front Desk.
  8. Unclaimed items will be held for a minimum of one (1) day and a maximum of six (6) weeks after which they will be disposed of or taken to a local charity. Found Baylor ID cards will be sent to the cashier's office in Robinson Tower on the following day.

USAGE POLICIES

Leisure Pool

  1. All users must shower before entering the pool.
  2. Diving is not permitted.
  3. People with open wounds or infectious diseases are not permitted in the pool.
  4. Gum and adhesive bandages are not allowed in the pool area.
  5. Training equipment must be used used in the manner for which it was intended. (ie. Kickboards for lap swimming only.)
  6. Lap lanes are for lap swimming only.
  7. All swimmers should circle swim when sharing a lane with others. Swim on the right side of the lane.
  8. All persons under the age of 16 must be accompanied and closely supervised by an adult (age 18 or over).
  9. Lingering in the slide receiving pool is not permitted.
  10. Running, pushing, and horseplay are prohibited.
  11. Only lap swimming is permitted when no lifeguards are on duty.
  12. No food or drink, except water in an unbreakable container, in pool area.
  13. Minimum height requirement for slide is 44 inches.
  14. Pool closes 30 minutes before the SLC closing time.
  15. Slide and vortex can be operated only when a minimum of three (3) lifeguards are present.

Spa

  1. All users must shower before entering.
  2. Please enter and exit slowly and cautiously.
  3. People with heart disease, abnormal blood pressure, epilepsy, or emotional disorders should not use the spa, as it may place them in physical danger.
  4. Pregnant women should not use the spa.
  5. Children under 5 are not allowed to use the spa and all other persons under age 16 must be accompanied and closely supervised by an adult (age 18 or over) while in spa.
  6. People with open wounds or infectious diseases are not permitted in the spa.
  7. Food or drink is not permitted in or near the spa.
  8. Do not block spa jets.
* Lifeguards have the authority to ask patrons to leave for failure to abide by any facility policy.

Sand Volleyball and Outdoor Basketball

  1. Food, glass, cans, or containers of any kind are not permitted in the court area.
  2. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
  3. Climbing on the fences is prohibited. Report ball over wall to an SLC staff member.
  4. Volleyballs hit on the roof are considered lost.
  5. Injuries must be reported to the front desk of the SLC.
  6. Courts are open on a first come, first serve basis except when reserved through the Campus Recreation Office.
  7. Access to the courts is permitted through the main entrance of the SLC only.
  8. Re-entry to the SLC is through the pool area.
  9. Sand is to be washed off prior to re-entering the SLC.
  10. Courts are for use by Baylor students, faculty, staff, and their guests only.
  11. Indoor equipment checked out at the SLC Front Desk may not be used outside.

Racquetball, Handball, and Squash Courts

  1. Racquetball, handball, and squash court reservations may be made up to 24 hours in advance beginning 6:00 a.m. weekdays, 9:00 a.m. Saturdays and 1:00 p.m. Sundays. (call 254-710-SLIC)
  2. To ensure reservation, all players should check-in at the SLC front desk. Please do not go directly to the courts.
  3. Reserved courts which are not claimed by 10 minutes after the hour will be available for walk-up participants on a first come, first served basis.
  4. Players with reservations will only be given court preference for up to 10 minutes after the hour.
  5. Protective eyewear is strongly encouraged.
  6. Athletic Shoes are required. (Non-marking court shoes only.)

Rock Climbing

  1. All climbers must be registered at the Front Desk.
  2. All climbers must have completed a rock climbing orientation and skills check before climbing.
  3. Climbers and belayers must use only those techniques taught at the Rock Climbing Orientation.
  4. Climbers must be on belay at all times. Solo climbing is not permitted and all climbers must be protected by a top rope belay.
  5. No one under the age of 18 is allowed to belay.
  6. Climbers are required to use the ropes and belay anchors provided at the SLC.
  7. If the climber uses his/her own equipment, the supervisor in charge must approve it.
  8. Non-marking shoes must be worn on the climbing surface and by the belayer. Bare feet, boots, or sandals are not permitted.
  9. Harnesses must be double-backed at the waist and at the leg loop buckles when worn by the climber and belayer.
  10. Always check, double check, and triple check the climbers knot, harness, and the belay system before each climb.
  11. Proper climbing/belaying commands should always be used.
  12. The use of chalk is limited to bison balls or other confined chalk. Loose or colored chalk is not permitted.
  13. No loose jewelry on the climber or the belayer.
  14. No food or drink near the Rock.
  15. Only instruction provided by the Rock climbing staff is permitted.
  16. The adjustment or rearrangement of holds is not permitted. The holds are changed periodically by the Rock climbing staff. Suggestions may be directed to them.
  17. Climb with caution and at your own risk.

Weights and Fitness Area

  1. No towel...No entry.
  2. Full length T-shirts with sleeves required. (No tank tops or sleeveless T-shirts.)
  3. Wipe off equipment after each use.
  4. Closed-toed athletic shoes required. (No sandals or bare feet.)
  5. Persons under the age of 16 may not use the fitness center.
  6. Personal belongings (i.e. backpacks, wallets, books) may not be placed anywhere in the fitness center. Keys and IDs must be placed in cubbies provided.
  7. Beverages in re-sealable plastic containers only.
  8. Food, tobacco, alcohol, and gum are not permitted.
  9. Collars are required when using free weight bars.
  10. Spotters are required at all press stations and squat racks.
  11. Re-rack weights after each use.
  12. Do not drop weights.
  13. Do not place weights on padded benches.
  14. Weight belts are recommended for free weight bars. Weight belts are not permitted on vinyl or padded equipment.
  15. Profanity or suggestive language will not be tolerated.
  16. Limit your cardiovascular workout to less than 30 minutes if others are waiting.
  17. Patrons are not permitted behind the Fitness Center desk.
  18. Report any injury or maintenance needs to the Fitness attendants on duty.
  19. Participation is at your own risk.
* Fitness attendants have the authority to ask patrons to leave for failure to abide by any facility policy.

Jogging Track

  1. The jogging direction will be rotated daily. Please follow the posted direction.
  2. Lanes 1 and 2 are for runners - faster traffic in Lane 1.
  3. Lanes 3 and 4 are for walkers - faster traffic in Lane 3.
  4. Athletic shoes are required.
  5. Stretching is allowed in the designated location only.
  6. No loitering is allowed on the track surface.

Gymnasium

  1. Athletic shoes are required. (Non-marking court shoes only.)
  2. Frisbees, footballs, batons, baseballs, etc. are prohibited.
  3. Dunking is allowed on the basketball courts; however, excessive hanging on the rim damages equipment and is not allowed.
  4. A challenge for the next game is issued verbally by waiting players. No one presently in a game may call "next game".
  5. Only one player need be present to issue a challenge.
  6. Losing player(s) are not eligible for the next game unless other player(s) are unavailable.
  7. Upon winning three consecutive games, the winning team or individual must exit the playing area if other players are waiting to play.
  8. Courts are available on a first come, first served basis, regardless of sport preference.

Renting a Locker

  1. Lockers may be rented at the SLC front desk by completing a Locker Application.
  2. Rental fees apply.
  3. Locker rentals will be valid until the day of graduation following the final semester of the reservation.
  4. Lockers that have not been renewed by their expiration date will be cleared and made available for a new user.
  5. The contents of expired lockers will be held at the SLC for no more than four (4) weeks before being donated to local charity.

Free Locker

  1. You may use a "Day Use" locker at no charge, but must remove your lock each day before leaving the SLC.
  2. After midnight each night, locks may be cut off at the owner's expense.
  3. Contents removed from the locker will be kept at the SLC front desk.

SLC Services

  1. Massage Therapy, Professional Training, and Baylor's Aerobics program (Bearobics/Bear Cycle/Bear Fit) may be purchased at the front desk of the SLC.
  2. Patrons must be a current Baylor ID holder and pay with cash, check, Bearbucks, or payroll deduction.
