Often students begin their college work using study techniques they employed in high school, only to find they no longer work. (They probably never did.) Advisors and instructors often pass along "study tips" and teach "study skills," but many of these are based on personal experience or other anecdotal evidence. Over the past decade those in the cognitive sciences have identified a handful of study techniques that work well not just in the lab but in the classroom. We've also discovered that certain commonly used techniques are relatively ineffective. We'll discuss practical -- but empirically validated -- techniques to improve student learning.Read More »
